Beards and religion

I don't care much for beards.

Neither Religion...

Hmmm.... I wonder if this is merely coincidental.

Soldiers are a different thing. Long beards and hair can be grabbed in combat.

I agree with this 100% i have always wondered though...

Lets say you have a beard ( or long hair.), then cut it in such a way that it looks full, but is structurally held on by only the minimum amount of hairs needed. Point being, someone is going to try and grab it, thinking for an easy kill and wind up surprised and vulnerable when they get no pull, only what appears to be a tribble in their hand that could be wielding something more useful. And i am sure anyone who would be up for medieval, hand to hand combat could deal with a few hairs pulled out of their head.

I guess I was hoping for some cool sounding reason I could bust out when people start hassling me to shave. :D

At maybe 5 minutes per day, 365 days a year, for around 70 years if you live to be 85, you're spending the equivalent of 3 months of your life standing in front of a mirror shaving. That could seriously cut into your beer drinking time.

Have you ever been in a fight?

It sounds like you don't drink beer while you shave.

Many as a matter of fact, as well as being trained in Brazilian Ju-jitsu, swordplay, and having an advanced laymen's knowledge of knife fighting,Unfortunately my experience in fully armored and armed hand to hand battlefield conditions is a bit slim, i take it yours isn't though, so feel free to inform me of your personal experiences in life or death fully armed and armored struggle.

Or to put it a bit more concisely.

Do you wish to make a point or just snipe at someone?

this thread reminded me of the cuban revolution. when the revels where on the hills they had no such luxury as a razor blade and the length of an insurgent's beard was directly related to the time he had been part of the revolution. the official press made fun of them calling them "los barbudos" (the bearded ones), something unacceptable among batista's elite. but instead cuban people accepted the term almost as synonymous of "revolution" to the point that police often arrested civilians just for sporting a beard. once the revolution ended many of the fighters didn't shave ever again including castro himself. i guess at that point it would have been easy for him to outlaw shaving. and now people would be asking themselves... why don't they shave...?

cheers

Beards are what God picks you up by when he wants a chat. Bigger beard = less chance of getting dropped from on high if it pulls out at the roots.

This does not seem to have troubled generation upon generation of ancient and medieval warriors one little bit. All of the most pugnacious ancient societies actively cultivated long hair and/or beards.
