Split Thread BBC news reporting

Question: can a non-UK citizen sue in an English civil court?

Yes, English courts are the the venue of choice for defemation cases, you just have to be able to show that the statement was seen or repeated here. There was a case (I vaguely remember) where the claimant was a foreign national and the the defendant a foreign newspaper but because it was shown that the paper had literally a couple of subscribers in the UK they sued in the English courts. If you watch South Park there's an episode (I think it was 'Locked in the Closet') that ends with Tom Cruise shouting "I'm going to sue you. In England!" in reference to this.

The limitation period is a year from publication, though, and from what I can see the programme was broadcast about a week before the presidential election.

I'm glad the US President and the rest of the world are seeing the BBC for what it is.

Its failure to tell the truth on everything from transgender ideology to economics to Gaza has done huge damage to politics and government in this country.

This should be the end of nationalised broadcasting

List of historic failings snipped for brevity. Some are fair, others are not. (Not having the right to strip a sacked presenter of his pension, for example)

I don't think that's fair at all. Verify fact-checks disputed story elements. It doesn't actively sift all output looking for bad editorial decisions. That's not what it is.

The departed Director General is a Tory through and through.

Pretty much the whole board is Tory, for example Robbie Gibb, former communications director to Theresa May and brother of Sir Nick Gibb, Tory MP. Being staunch and active Tories has been no impediment to becoming politics editor, look at Nick Robinson and Andrew Neal both of whom were important figures in local politics, leading and even founding Conservative Associations. Then you have things like when the BBC mocked up a photo to make it look like Jeremy Corbin was in Russia or when Boris Johnson turned up for Rememberance Sunday at The Cenotaph looking more dishevelled than usual and lay the wreath upside down so the BBC 'accidentally' broadcast a more dignified performance from a previous year instead. And then of course there's the entirely disproportionate platforming of Nigel Farage and all his parties over the last 15 years or so.

Perhaps Nadine Dorries could weigh in next with her well proven grasp of television funding models?

.. and?

Their reporting on Gaza is heavily pro-Palestinian and just as heavily anti-Israel - that's a Hard Left position
Their reporting on transgender issues is heavily pro-Transgender, and heavily anti-Gender Critical - that's a Hard Left position
Their reporting on illegal immigration is heavily pro-illegal immigration and heavily anti-border control - that's a Hard Left wing position

The BBC must be defunded, not only are they jeopardising trade agreements and relationships with the US. They fail to recognise Hamas as terrorists, and they indoctrinate our children with talk of a hundred genders. Its time for a shake-up.

So what? It means nothing. Donald Trump once stood as a Democrat!
It illustrates Pixel42's point that the BBC is not a monolith which does X "while all the time KNOWING" Y. If there was anyone complicit in covering up crimes committed by Jimmy Saville, they should be in the dock for it. Saying "the BBC" knew is just not true.

The top people who resigned over this obviously didn't review Panorama before broadcast as that's not their job. They carried the can because the buck stops with them.

What a triumph for the gammons that Tory Tim is gone from the BBC.
I wonder if the Labour government will decide to appoint someone further to the right in his place.

Oh, wait. No, I don't.

"In depth" report on Hamas 20th October 2025:

How does a group that has governed the Gaza Strip for almost 20 years, ruling two million Palestinians with an iron rod and fighting Israel in repeated wars, suddenly lay down its arms and relinquish control?

Judging by a steady stream of gruesome images emerging from Gaza since the ceasefire came into effect on 10 October, Hamas seems intent on reasserting its authority.

Its masked men, back on the streets, have been seen beating and executing opponents. Impromptu firing squads have dispatched kneeling men they say are members of rival groups, including some of Gaza's powerful clans.

Other victims, cowering in terror, are shot in the legs or beaten with heavy clubs.

Some of those now being attacked by Hamas had been part of groups involved in looting and diverting aid, according to one aid worker I spoke to, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The UN has also accused criminal gangs of stealing aid.
