Agreed. And I won't defend it. I will however offer some perspective. Politics requires either persuading the people to one's way of thinking or doing what people want you to do. That's built into the system. Politicians do what it takes to get elected. Better to be in office and effect change than not is the philosophy of many if not most politicians.

What is actually disgraceful is that they lies work and they work because many people would often rather hear a lie than the truth. They want to know that our lives can be made better without much sacrifice on their part. Obama's ratings say something about him. The ratings overall say something about society.

Good point. I'm not sure how those in the latter category are doing at fundraising though. I think that's probably the best indicator of non-viability. But it's too early to count any of them out.
