Australia's Gun Problem

They made a video after the shooting, and apparently it was religious and crank nutbaggery of the first order.

After ambushing police officers with a hail of bullets, Stacey and Gareth Train huddled together in the dark at their remote Queensland property and recorded a video.

“They came to kill us and we killed them,” Gareth said in the video, uploaded on Monday night and still circulating online.

“If you don’t defend yourself against these devils and demons, you’re a coward.”

There was a report on the ABC that went pretty deeply into how weird they were. I only read a small part of it because it was pretty disturbing. I haven't gone back to look for the link, but there was serious mental illness involved.
 
The older brother appears to be the source of the strife. A manipulative, controlling psychopath. Probably took after their father in a way, but the father took the less insane option of starting up a fringe evangelical church that preached a strict, literal interpretation of the Bible.

I've noticed the media are now reporting the sequence the other way around, i.e. the neighbours noticed the fire after the Police Officers were shot.

I'll happily stand corrected.

I'm also surprised by four officers attending a routine missing persons enquiry.
 
Kean backs gun laws following Wieambilla shooting

The New South Wales treasurer, Matt Kean, has backed the premier, Dominic Perrottet, and interstate colleagues in calling for changes to gun laws across Australia.

Speaking in Sydney today, Kean said:

Nationalising gun laws is a good thing. The nation is still in mourning following the shocking tragedy that happened last week. No one ever wants to see that happen again. We thought that it would never happen again after Port Arthur, but if there’s an opportunity to see something good come out of this, then it’s tightening gun laws and seeing national reforms in the space.​

I believe one was a dog handler and one a probationer.

Experts say chilling videos posted by the couple at the centre of the deadly Queensland shooting have sparked conspiracy theories about the tragedy being a “cover-up” or “false flag” event.

Conspiracists have spent countless hours on encrypted apps and online forums for more than a week, attempting to present an alternative reality of the shooting that left two officers and a neighbour dead.

Several of these theories echo the paranoia and conspiratorial thinking of the shooters – Gareth and Stacey Train and Gareth’s brother Nathaniel, who were later killed in a shootout with police – with some presenting them as victims who “knew too much”.

Some have taken note of Nathaniel’s anger at his former employer, the New South Wales education department, while others have falsely claimed the Trains were killed because the government and gas industry wanted to access their property for fracking.

Man with disability keeps gun licence after two-year legal battle with police

A man has successfully overturned a decision by NSW Police to revoke his gun licence because of his disability.

The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) this week declared Gregory Ashton was a "fit and proper person who can be trusted to have possession of firearms" after a two-year battle to keep his licence and his guns.

Police officers made the decision to revoke his licence in September 2020 after visiting his home for a routine firearms inspection, where they observed Mr Ashton using a wheelchair due to the effects of muscular dystrophy.

Police later sent a letter informing Mr Ashton his licence had been revoked "due to your current physical condition, being confined to a wheelchair" and claimed he had "no genuine reason to possess a firearms licence".

Police also claimed Mr Ashton was "argumentative and belligerent" during the inspection and had a "disregard for firearms legislation".

NCAT Senior Member Linda Rogers overturned the decision, saying there was no evidence Mr Ashton could not be trusted with guns.

"I am satisfied that there is no appreciable risk arising from his physical disabilities in his handling or use of firearms," Ms Rogers wrote.

Good. This was a stupid and discrimatory reason to revoke his license, and I am happy that he is free once more to pursue his hobbies of hunting and collecting - both valid genuine reasons to possess a firearms license in NSW.
 
Rory Adams had eight guns, ammunition stashed in Swansea house during siege, police allege

A man accused of holding police at bay in his home south of Newcastle for almost two days will remain in custody.

Rory Adams did not appear in Belmont Local Court on Monday where his lawyer did not apply for bail on the 35 charges against him and it was formally refused.

Court documents allege Mr Adams had an armoury of weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition during a 45-hour stand-off with police.

8 illegal guns?

At one time I had 5 rifles, two pistols and a shotgun.
As for ammunition, I always bought enough match grade from the same batch to see me through competitions. I probably had several thousands rounds of all types in the safe at any given time.

Not illegal of course. I suppose it means I had an 'Armoury'

I guess if he wasn't a competitor in competitions, then thousands of rounds would be a lot.

I know guys that compete, and they'd typically spend 500 rounds (IIRC) in a training session.

(They self load to cut down on costs)

We used to joke that one of my workmates would buy a take-away on the way home, and be making rounds all the way up to bed time on a Friday, then 'spend' them all on Saturday.

(He could trivially out shoot me, with either hand)

(I was typically surprised if any of my rounds ended up in the black dot in the middle)
(And he'd be concerned if any of his didn't.)
 
If the agenda is there are too many guns in too many hands in the USA, and that Australia (and most of the rest of the Western world) do gun control better, where do I sign up?
