Australia

I suspect you're right, but I'd want the results of the weigh-in before I plonked a penny on anything.

. . . just waiting for to the cross to Randwick . . .

Before we go, there it is . . . weight's correct . . . all clear at Flemington now . . . It's Morelia spilota by 417 lengths from Felis catus . . .

I say again . . . paying now on Morelia spilota . . .

Mugs. It was a shoe-in. I'm goin' to the bar. Next race is from Eagle Farm and the favourite is Oxyuranus microlepidotus. Save your money, punters, or you'll lose the lot.

I try, as much as anything in this thread, to give people a 'feel' for Australia.

I have no idea whether I succeed or not, but by cracky, I have some fun in the attempt.

Cheers, Cobber.

Very nice!

Mind you, little Pari was giving Mum's full grown cat, Monty a run for his money when he was staying last week. She'd get her back up and hiss and he'd leave quickly via the cat flap in the back door.

But I don't know if snakes speak 'Cattish'.

I keep posting these updates in SI&CE, but people over there are more interested in . . . other things, so I'll post news from the last few weeks of Jesse's trip in this thread, where the more erudite folks hang out.

50 Knot Gusts and Tough Conditions Continue for Jessica

14 Apr 2010

Jessica Watson's Mum said:
The tough conditions of the Southern Ocean over the past week have continued to confront Jessica today, as she battled six metre plus swells, cold stinging rain and wind gusts of 50 knots.

After sailing south east in 25-30 knot winds earlier today, sudden gusts of 50 knots hit Ella’s Pink Lady, creating two large tears in the mainsail. Fortunately conditions have eased to 25 knots, but it has been another very challenging day for 16 year old Jessica.

However,

As usual, Jessica has a positive attitude and reports that all is well, as she has a spare mainsail and the prediction is for better weather over the next week as she heads east to Tasmania.

Go Jesse!

Jessica Doing Well

24 Apr 2010
Jessica's Mum said:
Just a quick update to advise that Jessica called in tonight and reports all is well.

It was sunny with winds at 30 knots for most of today, gusting up to 35 knots, with a 5 metre swell. The wind and sea are both expected to increase overnight and tomorrow.

Due to the current conditions which are expected to last until the middle of next week, it is difficult for Jessica to write blogs regularly at the moment.

In the interim, we will continue to provide brief daily updates for everyone.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget

To my brothers and sisters across the ditch; on this day may we stand together as one people, united in grief for our collective loss, in gratitude at the sacrifice made by past generations who surrendered their tomorrow for our today, and in respect to those who today continue to selflessly serve our nations in defense of the ideals and values that define us.

In particular, in memory to those who left our lands and ventured across the vast wilderness of the globe to fight on distant shores, and fell, never to be known, never to again lie in the embrace of their home.

Te mamae nei a te pouri nui
Tenei ra e te tau
Aue hoki mai ra ki te kainga tuturu
E tatari atu nei ki a koutou
Nga tau roa
I ngaro atu ai te aroha
E ngau kino nei i ahau aue taukuri e

The great pain we feel
Is for you who were our future
Come back return home,
We have waited for you
Through the long years
You were away. Sorrow
Aches within me.

Wonderful words Gumboot - All I hope is those men and women who made that sacrifice can look at Australian and New Zealand today and think "It was worth it"

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours... you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well.
