Australia

I just want to give credit for my new very Aussie avatar. Love it - thanks Akhenaten :)

I guess five digit foreign postcodes are excluded ...

One in, all in, Cobber. Hit us with the last three.

Pah, it should be Australia's native flower, the wattle.

(I live in a place called Wattle Glen, where thousands of people descended on in the early 1900s on Wattle Day, September 1).

Siderolxylon, in a blatant display of overt consistency, has chosen as his avatar a picture of Eucalyptus sideroxylon, the famous Red Ironbark, or Mugga.

Hmm . . .

The Great Barrier Reef

Not only is the Great Barrier Reef magnificent, it'is extremely accessible.

There are dozens of resorts located on some of the thousands of islands, as well as many more on the mainland.

This is a photo taken through the front door of my hotel room on Hamilton Island in October, 2006.

ETA: Oops!

I accidentally posted this in the wrong thread, but I'll leave it 'cos it's a nice picture.

It makes better sense here than in the other one.
I thought I had said something wrong.:D

I love it up that way, North of Cairns is a favourite area of mine, I've been back a few times over the years. Palm Cove x 3. Port Douglas x 2.
A bit South to Townsville (I reckon you'd know that place in side out) and Magnetic Island in my 20s was my introduction, and I just kept drifting further north after that.

:D

Sounds great. Maggy Island long had a reputation for being a fun place, but I can't say what it's like these days. I think a little article might be a good idea, and I'll look into it after Hokulele's Surfing Safari mission is complete.

I like Cairns and the reef well enough, but Kuranda is the place to die for. I've got some photos of the area somewhere that I can scan, including the Barron Gorge, so that might make another interesting post for later on as well.

If you have some piccies and a story or two we can make a joint effort out of it.

:)

Cheers Cobber.

I have some pretty boring piccies of me up the tablelands (Cathedral figs etc). Boring cos I'm in them mainly. When we are up that part of the world, we always take a day out to 'go up' there and do the market and see a few sights.

What do you have in mind re joint effort? i.e. what would you like?

Bump.

This in another thread.

Good Lawdy up in Hebben that's a laugh. That letter coming from a country where selling Golliwog dolls is just fine happens to be the epitome of hubris.

Irony, thy name is Australia.

Has anyone seen golliwogs for sale recently?

I had a gollowog as a small child - it was in the 60s too. I also had an Andy Pandy (my real name is Andy) and a clown. They were my favourite toys - I still have them sonewhere, believe it or not.

I never had a golliwog, but my little sister (b 1956) did.

I still have my copy of Epaminondas Helps in the House though, if that's any use to you in your discussion.

Are we being big ol' racists again or something?

It seems that way.

I just remembered having "Little black Sambo" book when I was a kid too. It's helped make me so racist I help the black, brown, yellow, white and purple virtually every day of my life.

Australia has purple people? Your cup runneth over in the weird wildlife department, and now you've got genuine purple people as well? It's just not fair. Do you also have purple people eaters?

Sadly, they are in between black and blue.

Nah your cool, I was being a bit too cryptic - and light at the same time. While it's a very serious subject, I can (rightly or wrongly) find a bit of humour in most situations. :)

Meh, I don't think he cares. I guess it's perfectly fine for him to apply his own country's morals and racial stereotypes on others, but should someone else to it to an American? How dare they.

Yes. On election day (the SA election) I went in to one of the shops that was near the polling place and they were selling them. Although I was informed that they are apparently called "gollidolls" (or however the hell you spell it).
