Australia

Have those swans just finished a shift at the coal mine?

Yup. This is the clean-up area. You can see one of the miner birds in the middle distance who has finished his ablutions and is making his way to the car park.

Swans are used to mine coal in Australia because the unusually thin seams of coal are sandwiched between extremely hard basalt deposits* meaning that mines can only be dug with a roof height of about a metre.

* igneous rock/coal deposit/igneous rock - yet another unique feature of Australia. I have no explanation for this phenomenon (yet).

BTW I have just nominated the Pharoah's post about Vonnie (with his permission). When it duely makes next month's shortlist, I expect multiple votes.

As I always say when I vote at elections and asked "have you voted before?" by the Electoral Officer, "Of course. Vote early, vote often". I get the same look year after year.

Yep I suspect I will be making a point to x the box as well. Funny thing they have exactly the same saying about voting in Chicago

I promised this some time ago.

A side-by-side comparison of the traditional Kookaburra Song and the flute riff from Men at Work's Land Down Under.

Have a listen, and see how similar they aren't.

I have an opinion about the people pressing this issue in Court.

They wankst.

Australia is a large country occupying a continent of the same name, situated between the South Pacific, Southern and Indian Oceans.

To the North lie New Guinea, Timor and Indonesia; to the East is New Zealand. Far to the South and West are Antarctica and Africa respectively.

The flora and fauna include many unique and fascinating examples of a land long separated from Gondwana.

Human settlement began approximately forty thousand (40 000) years ago with the arrival of the Aborigines, now generally and respectfully known as the Koori.

British settlement began in the form of a penal colony in 1788, following the discovery and mapping of the East coast in 1770 by Captain James Cook, RN.

Ausralia has a long and varied history, which ranges from the dreamtime tales of the Koori to the development of cutting-edge technology, cast on the rich tapestry of an ancient landscape.

It is a land of legend.

Please discuss.

How do Australians feel about your country being started as a penal colony?

Not much. That was over 200 years ago. We have kinda gone on and achived a couple of things since then that we are pretty proud of though

Strewth mate, if yer gonna come the raw prawn that way yez'll need to be liftin' yer game. That's the worst dittomincin' I've heard since Jesus was playin' fullback fer Jerusalem. No wukkers about it sunshine, yer a dwinglebanger.

So, in other words this is still a sensitive topic.

But, Australia is not known for having a crime problem.

Well given that only Sydney Hobart and Perth were founded as penal colonies, and Melbourne Brisbane and Adelaide were free settlers your question seems a little irrelevant

I believe that our little chum is doomed to irrelevance in this thread, which is a bit of a shame, really. I've been hoping for ages we'd get a troll of our own, and now it seems that all they could spare us was a doodlewhomper.

I intend to complain to the management long and loud until they send us a proper troll.

We have rights too, ya know!

I've been listening to a Chicago station on internet radio for the last few weeks and judging by the music it's a really on-the-go place.

AND they play heaps of Kylie, so obviously they have impeccable taste as well.

Haven't heard a whiff of SWCBM yet, which is a huge plus.

Yeah I was at least expecting some Sydney Opera House = Nazi connection

Have you been following the thread about that in Forum Management?

I've decided to re-brand that sad lot as neo-Nachos and Coconut deniers.

I reckon it only showed up here to see why its threads kept getting bumped by this one, but I have a feeling that enlightenment will continue to elude it.

Which is a pity, 'cos I have some spare clues I was going to share with it.

Ah well, sic vista est, as old Ned would have said, if he'd spoken Latin.

The only Nazi connection I know of with Australia is Alexander Rud Mills. Supposedly he meet personally with Hitler.

Nah, we got better than that pipsqueak. Research more, little feller, and get back to us.

Protip: Wiki isn't much on these things, see if you can find some better sauces.

Here's a nice music clip for you to listen to while you Google.
