Australia

I should have continued... while I don't have A favourite, I've got plenty of favouriteS.

Corona
Kingfisher (Indian beer)
Cooper's Pale Ale
Foster's :duck:

And I just tried a dark lager (not as dark as Guinness) the other day from Aldi, which was reallllly good, but I can't remember the name.

Thanks. I was long overdue in sorting that out. :o

Corona's nice, and so is Stella Artois, apropos of Spanish-sounding things, but I'll have to put Kingfisher on my 'to do' list.

Another vote for Coopers Pale Ale, I see. Could well be a winner.

Funny you should mention Foster's; I was just thinking the other day that despite having been describing it as Panther Piss for years, it's so long since I've tried it I can't even remember what it actually tastes like. I must conduct some research.

I decided on a few Guinesseseses myself tonight, and they's sliding down quite nicely, but they remind me of another nice brew that you might like, in light of your mention of the nameless dark lager. Here be its pitcher:

Is good.

Ooh, must try that one, Akhenaten!

How did I forget Stella?! Definitely a fave.

Do try Kingfisher. With a curry.

I've always preferred lagers over ales. Although I do like a nice cider occasionally.

Ditto, and double ditto.

Also, alcoholic ginger beer is nommy.

Never liked ginger beer. Don't like the taste of ginger for a start, and when I was a kid, my dad made a few batches of ginger beer. Really bad ginger beer. *shudder*

I'm going to perversely complexicate things by expressing a preference for a Pilsener.

As for ginger beer, I seem to represent the middle ground between you two - I love eaty ginger but I can't stand drinky ginger, be it beer or ale, alcoholic or boring, with but one notable exception, which is delish:

Bundy Rum and dry ginger ale. Works well.

Unpatriotic of me, but this is the best in the world:

I believe we should argue about this for a few pages.

Or, for the rare occasion I prefer a Lager, This:

I normally only drink Lager on a really hot day though, I prefer Ale and Wheat Beer.

ETA: You should try the Holgate ESB* Akenaten, it's made not far from you at a brewpub in Woodend.

*Stands for Extra Special Bitter

Don't bother. Do you remember a few years back when they banned glass bottles on New Year's Eve? I bought Fosters in cans that year, and it was as bad as its reputation.

What an XLNT post. Thanks, Damien.

Woodend is within easy lunching distance, and the Holgate has been added to the menu.

Cheers, Cobber.

I do indeed remember, and I'm more than happy to trust your judgement, but I also trust the Nay lass, so I find myself visiting quandary, yet again.

I believe I'm going to have to test this for myself, come what may, so at least one person is going to get to say, "I told you so!" *

* unless I asterisk my way out of a commitment to either proposition. Been known to happen.

Beer!

I have discovered that Northern California is a beer mecca. In spite of that, my favorite is still the Maui Brewing Company Bikini Blonde.

Yummy.

I will say, Zep talked me into trying a Bluetongue at the place we all had lunch in Sydney. It was very tasty.

I've not had that pleasure, although I love ginger beers, ciders, and -- if I'm going to be forced to drink a beer -- a good IPA would be my first choice. Oddly enough, an excellent (very) dark beer would be my second choice. Not fond of that middle-of-the-road lager stuff, myself. But most times, I'd rather drink water than beer.

Here's us all thinking that you were busy moving, when you've really just been off sampling beer??:D
Knowing the source of the best beer in the neighborhood is critical, don't you think, Lolly? ;)

I used to sell newspapers in that pub as a boy. It is (was, I think it's now closed) in Chippendale next to the old Kent Brewery (also now closed and being turned into a yuppie enclave). That pub is also notable for being used to film a very violent scene in "Blue Murder".

Chippendale is a very interesting suburb. At one stage full of factories and slums (and the brewery, which took up about a fifth of the whole suburb) and around 16 pubs, all in less than one square kilometer. Now all the factories are closed and turned into apartments, offices and studios. I used to say I lived in Redfern because I was so embarrassed about Chippendale. And there are only about three or four pubs left.

The former Australian Pub is still there, and still serving a mean lemon squash (amongst other things), only these days it's known as "The Abercrombie" 'cos it's on the corner of Abercrombie Street and Broadway.

I'm from Petersham, BTW.
