Attended A Catholic Funeral-Mass

ceo, the problem is the philosophical notion that one could be judged and found wanting in this oh so short life and pay the price for eternity.

I understand that problem, but it is technically a different problem than the one expressed by SPQR in the OP and to which I was responding.

That is untrue.

SPQR said:
The worst part for me, i.e. most insulting, was when the preist said, "And let us all pray that Violet(the mother) will be judged mercifully in the kingdom of heaven."
From the OP.

From the OP.

Yes, but in typical fashion you left out the most relevant part - SPQR's explanation of why he found that insulting. What SPQR said bothered him was the notion of a person leading an exemplary life and yet still having to go through a judgment process (at all, one presumes), which SPQR apparently regards as an indignity regardless of the outcome. As I said, at least as expressed in the OP, that is technically a different problem from the one raised by SezMe, which focuses on the alleged inequity of eternal punishment.

Now you're vainly attempting to quibble. SezMe explained more than one reason why it is grotesque and stupid for a sick and sadistic god to behave that way, and for the preacher to dare comment on it.

ID, I think ceo_esq did logically - when his whole paragraph is considered together - make a point different than the one I made. I think it is a mighty fine line to walk, but he did. IMO.

I think he's being an apologist for a revolting religion.

BTW, this is what I meant.

Just thought I'd chime in here. Carry on. :D

The weirdest funeral I ever went to was for a co-worker who had died completely unexpectedly of a massive heart attack while out walking for his health. Because he was dressed for walking, he had no identification on him and it took three days to identify him. Gibby was in his mid-40's and in America on a student visa. He had no family, lived alone and this happened on a Friday, so Monday we just figured he was sick when he didn't show up for work.

So, the funeral plans are announced and off several of my co-workers and I go to attend and pay our respects. Good Ed Almighty... what a scene! Gibby was from Eritrea (sp?) and whatever religion he belonged to (or was merely being sent off with) believed in the whole wailing, uvulating and mass hysteria. Women were literally beating on the casket wailing for Gibby to come back. Women crying insanely, screaming at the top of their lungs, passing out from hyper-ventilating, men picking the women up off the floor and hauling them into chairs, the whole nine yards. My co-workers and I sat in the back absolutely stunned at the incredible drama going on around us.

My will has been made out for years (I'm a single parent) and I've already discussed my final directives with my entire extended family. Cremate me, have a hell of a party and then my biker friends will spread my ashes out on some curvy road somewhere fun.

My will specifically states that I don't want any religious expression at my funeral.

I told my family I want them to play that annoying "So you had a bad day" song they play when people are voted off American Idol. That would be hilarious. :)

I think it was comedian Jim Brewer who described his ideal funeral and made me laugh my ass off. He said something like "I want the lights to go out and then a strobe light to come on as my body is lowered down on wires, then... techno music!"

I want them to play "Thriller" at my funeral. It will keep them in the right spirit at the reading of my will. I'm going to leave everything to myself, in case I come back as a zombie or vampire. How many people have screwed themselves out of all their stuff by not planning for that?

How dare you bring a song performed by a child molester into a church. Oh, nevermind. :-p
The first useful thing you've added to this thread. It got a grin out of me.

For your other posts, taking such offense at "an imaginary god" and tossing out the bile bombs strkes me as your giving far too much emotion and time, of yours, to its presumed, by you, non existence. :)

ID, mildly "owned" by a god that doesn't exist. I find that amusing.

The appeal of Catholic funerals is that the rites are soothing and familiar. It helps to have a well-oiled funeral run smoothly down the same tracks it has for generations, because it's something of a comfort to be reminded in your grief that while things change and people go, some things don't change.

*clipped*

I think it's a pretty good system--an organized, orderly proceeding, that takes up a good chunk of time, is familiar through long use, and brings you in with a lot of other people so you're not grieving alone somewhere with nothing to do.

Yup. This, to me, is one of the few redeeming qualities of religion. I think it would be good to develop these sorts of comforting social customs without resorting to the whole god thing.
