Attack on my machine

Well, maybe not an attack.

I get a full screen pop-up from this address

http://www.searchxl.com/dir.php

That can only be removed by either waiting 5 minutes or going in to the task manager and stopping it.

2 questions.

First, how to block it
Second, how to attack their goddamn system.
 
Open your hosts file.

Add: 192.168.0.1 www.searchxl1.com

and save. You may have to reboot.


If it pops up again, note it's new address, and add that one to the hosts file as well.

That's the short term solution. Long term, you have to get one of those anti-spyware programs to remove the crap thats popping it up from your system.

As for hacking the... best method would be legal. Contact the BBB. Also, find out who their ISP is, and complain until they get dumped. If others are as p!ssed off as you, a class action lawsuit might be in order.

I think there was a Yahoo article about the feds going after some 'anti-spyware' companies that were actually spyware companies.

Better idea: Use 127.0.0.1 instead of a 192.168 number.

According to WHOIS, searchxl1.com is available, which means nobody's using it. I suspect something else is redirecting it. Your system may be compromised. Definitely get some good spyware software and run it.
 
Yeah, definitely download and run Spybot . You'll be surprised at how much crap makes it's way onto your system.
 
Are you meaning one of those popups that look like a system alert kind of thing? Windows messaging alerts?

Go to:
Settings > Administrative Tools > Services
and disable Messenger (right-click > properties, change startup type to disabled). Its fairly useless for anything other than spamming these days anyway.

Hehe. I'm a 5 platform guy. I use Win XP, Mac OS X, Solaris, Linux and IRIX. OK, maybe one platform and four versions of another platform...

If he's getting that kind of spam he better get a firewall quick. Windows Messaging utilized the NetBios port (139? I believe..)

If he has that port open on the Internet he's probably already pooched.
