I haven't seen a thread on this yet.

There was a terrible attack today in Kenya.

The number of people killed in an attack by al-Shabab Islamist militants on a university in north-eastern Kenya has risen to 147, Kenyan government officials say.
The operation to secure the Garissa University College campus was now over, with all four attackers killed, they added.

So? They were just Xians. Left unchecked, they might have refused to cater a gay wedding at some point. Best to get the out of the way now before they hurt someone's feelings.

You're slipping Travis, you didn't tie this to US conservatives.

147 - man, that's screwed up. A peaceful and largely neutral country too, and lately they've just been dragged into this growing mess.

When the USA was attacked on 9/11 there were those who said it was because of support for Israel, or the 1991 Iraq war, or our support for the Saudis, or because we abandoned Afghanistan after the USSR pulled out.

What do those people use explain the attacks on Kenya?

Let's just wait on the next Pepe Escobar piece of drivel claiming the attack was obviously an inside job.

Universities are bad. It's just awful what those universities did to Palestinian Kenyans. The chickens are coming home to roost.

remember children-religion is good

The horror continues . Don't try to make sense of this atrocity you will just cause bleeding on your brain. My worry is again the so called non extreme or moderate Muslim reaction will be very muted. I don't want to create a false dichotomy but if the bulk of Islam is against these attacks why are they not more pro active in there actions and words. A parralel can be made with the vast bulk of anti abortionists who claim they are non violent but who always seem to find some way to excuse clinic bombers and the assassins of doctors. While a majority of Muslims here in the UK say they are anti terrorism they largely try to water down horrific actions such as these by saying things like 7/7 was a frame up or that free speech should not mean blasphemy or delve into victim blaming- the violence is inexcusable but they allowed a rude drawing of the prophet, and so on

Skeptichaggis, I think you will like this article:

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jan/14/charlie-hebdo-add-faithophobia-to-my-crimes

Last week I asked for us to continue in our disrespect and I meant it. Why must I have respect for religions that have little respect for me? That seek to curtail the rights of women? That find me unclean? I am not just talking about Islam here, but pretty much all religion. So there is some equal opportunity offence for you. Faithophobia. Add it to the list of my crimes.

I don’t have to go back to seventh-century texts to find faiths in which women are not seen as equal to men. This is from the founder of another religion: “A society in which women are taught anything but the management of a family, the care of men and the creation of the future generation is a society which is on the way out.” That’s L Ron Hubbard for you. And you can satirise Scientology all you like.

The images from inside Garissa University are both heartbreaking and horrific. 147 bright young people with their whole life ahead of them murdered for the sake of a non-existent god. Happy Easter.

Kenya has had a lot of success agains the militants recently. The problem is that defending soft targets from attack is difficult. Security forces can't be everywhere and the militants will simply pick targets that are not as well defended.

Good police work will be needed to solve this problem, not just military force. Kenya needs to find the support networks and funding sources and close them down.
