Where are the atheist signs against Ramadan, Chanukah, Ramnavami, Holi, Wesak, Birthday of Guru Nanak, Ashura, Equinoxes, Birth of the Bab? Why just Christmas? Truly baffling.

Having grown up in the Bible belt, knowing that there are more atheists or doubters of the dominant religion is helpful. I've never been a shrinking violet, so I didn't really care if I pissed off the 99% of my high school that was Christian. Some are more timid, or in situations where speaking out can lead to bullying...etc.

I see value in simply showing an atheist presence.

Where were the signs that singled out Christianity? Having up signs promoting reason and denouncing religion as myth pretty much cover all religions. It only looks like atheist vs christians because christianity is the only religion represented. Atheism is non-denominational.

Why just Christmas?

Because every year, at this time, certain fundamentalists work extra hard to **** with the separation of church and state. Atheists (rightly) see that as something worth responding to.

But to answer your question - it's because the Muslims aren't putting the moon-and-star on courthouse lawns at Ramadaan. In some areas Jewish groups put up menorahs, but they only started doing this because Jews were getting pissed off at the Christian nativity scenes. In other words - menorahs went up for the same reasons that atheists are putting up their displays.

I can see the pettiness. It appears to be like taking something you probably wouldn't want for its own sake (I have no interest in putting up a "solstice display") just so a person who really does want it can't have it.
