Quoted for truth.

Destroying a book is pretty tool-like behavior. I can't even bring myself to throw away lousy books, I usually donate them. Nursing homes and jails are usually glad to take them.

I take it a step further, i cannot, for the life of me throw away almost any form of media...besides music c.d.s for some reason.

I have stacks of magazines, ( not to a hoarding extent, lots of space, and only a small interest in any magazine.), books, etc. That i can guarantee, if they don't dissolve of their own accord, will still be with me at age 62, just like they are at 26.

And they have came in handy, nothing worse than buying an old video game at a flea market, getting stuck, ( sans net connection, as i usually am.), and not having a 15 year old magazine to give you tips and hints.

Also, the problem with doing something stupid to get the message across is that it often results in getting the wrong kind of message across. In this case, that All atheists are nothing but a bunch of troglodyte savages.

The message I'm getting from them is "our copy of the bible is missing some pages."

Though I'm not sure why they'd want to advertise that fact.

Tearing up a bible would be off-message. On a small scale, it is making the same point in the same way as burning books. No.

Go after the message, not the vessel containing it. Off target.

Dickish, juvenile behaviour. It reminds me of a political smear campaign. Prove your point without resorting to what amounts to spitting on someone else's beliefs. That type of action makes me seethe with frustration. Shame on them. Grow the hell up and use your God given brains to further your point.(ha ha ) Seriously, respecting other's beliefs, whether you're in aggreement or not, should be considered.

I'm getting the sense that some have not read the article. Allow me to quote some of the key points:

Backyard Skeptics members plan to rip out pages with specific passages of the Bible that they say portray immoral biblical law, organizers say.
“We’re not there to burn the Bible or desecrate,” Bruce Gleason, director of Backyard Skeptics, said.

Group members will rip out verses in the Bible such as Deuteronomy 22: 14-31...

...the demonstration is based loosely on Thomas Jefferson’s Bible...

“We will have copies of the Jefferson Bible (on Saturday),” Gleason said.

I am not affiliated with this group, just merely pointing out how quickly the meaning and context was blown out of proportion with an inflammatory headline. Based on those points, I would tend to view this particular event as a different sort than recent burning a Koran as a public demonstration.

I read the article and I agree with your interpretation. However, many, perhaps most, Christians are not going to see those nuances, and will simply focus on the fact evil baby-eating atheists are destroying the bible.

I continue to think that what the group is planning is not very smart. As I said in an earlier post, there are other, better ways to get the same messages out.

I voted no, but of course im a believer.

IMO, A better option is to empty your whole house and anything to do with religion, give the bible to your church if you have one. I would even go as far to say any Atheist books that mention religion in a sense to be insulting to religion. There is no need to have a lack of belief in any God(s) and not have peace and love.

It may be better to start with the Jefferson version in the first place.

I can guarantee you, people here will not see the difference between "ripping out immoral Biblical law" and "desecrating the Bible because they are atheists who hate God and hate Christians."

This same group put up a billboard nearby and a Christian group sat underneath and prayed every day until the billboard came down. This is Orange County, CA - the westernmost notch of the bible belt.

I have a bag full of tiny silver cross charms.

I make jewelry, and sometimes I make it for my religious friends. They like the little silver crosses. I've made lots of jewelry for religious people. All of them know I'm an atheist, and yet all of them have accepted, and paid for, their jewelry. It doesn't bother them a bit that an atheist made it for them. They appreciate the respect I show to them and to their beliefs. They understand I don't believe the same things, but they simply don't care.

I made a bookmark using one of the little silver crosses for a dear friend of mine on this forum. She's a Christian. She really likes the bookmark, and keeps it in her bible. That pleases me. I'm glad she likewise gets some pleasure from it.

You, Mr. Total Stranger, don't get to dictate how I choose to live. You can keep trying, but you will have no effect.

For my part, I hope you live the way you see fit, and hold whatever beliefs make you happy, give you comfort, and bring you peace.

That you can't hold the same hope for me says nothing nice about your beliefs.

I can see the point they are trying to get across, but in this case I feel the ends do not justify the means. I think it would be more effective to show how the US Constitution and/or local laws would have to be "ripped up" to match various biblical requirements.

But then again, ripping anything out of the OT doesn't really go against Christian beliefs, since Jesus allegedly did so as well.
