“Somewhere along this journey,” he says, “both mine and Miley’s faith has been shaken. That saddens me the most.” When they first came to Hollywood for Hannah Montana, the two of them would drive down the freeway together to the studio each morning, and every day Miley would point out the sign that said

ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY
ATHEISTS UNITED

Just before moving out to Los Angeles, the whole family had been baptized together by their pastor at the People’s Church in Franklin, Tennessee. “It was Tish’s idea,” he remembers. “She said, ‘We’re going to be under attack, and we have to be strong in our faith and we’re all going to be baptized…’” And there, driving to work each day in the City of Angels, was this sign. “A physical sign. It could have easily said ‘You will now be attacked by Satan.’

Makes me ashamed to be an atheist. Really? All this power and Billy Ray Cyrus is the best we can do?

I'm confused.

Who is attacking him? I'm not seeing it in that link, unless it's somewhere down in the comments.

"Power"?

ETA:

I've just noticed that I'm a moron. Via some inexplicable brain malfunction, I somehow interpreted Lisa's post as entirely serious. Bizarrely, I though she was lamenting Friend Atheist's blog post as attacking Cyrus.

Any faith that's shaken by the simple realization that not everyone in the world shares it doesn't deserve the name.

And I'm not sure that sentence deserves the name either, but if you can parse it, good for you!

So what's the point of this article? Atheist = Satanic invasion with the caveat that the only way to safety is with a holy dunk?

Those damn atheists and their devilish "keep the highway clean" schemes... Probably preparing the way for Satan to drive right into town.

Should be a law against it, I say!

Lisa has her tongue firmly implanted in her cheek.

Nice story Lisa, I never liked him much anyway. And being from Montana, Hannah can bite me.

"We can't stop here! This is atheist country!"

Billy Ray Cyrus- 'Entering this industry, you are now on the highway to darkness...'"

Really, Billy? That's what a highway sign about people who clean up litter on the roads told you? :p

If "this industry" is so bad, why have you been in it- and have been collecting million dollar paychecks from it- since 1980? You were hardly "entering it" then, having been in it for more than half your life at that point, if my math is correct.

It also apparently wasn't so bad that you couldn't put your daughter into it when she was eight. But putting your third grader "on the highway to darkness" was ok because she was earning millions, right?

Not saying that Hollywood isn't evil- just pointing out the hypocrisy.

What I find odd, is he was okay with the sexy pics she took, but the highway sign freaked him out? That's some mighty fine parenting there, Lou.

It's ok, everyone. I called Billy Ray and explained to him that atheists weren't the ones attacking him.

I said it was Lisa's fault.

I too feel like my beliefs are under attack every time I see a simple mention of the existence of people who disagree with me. This is a perfectly reasonable stance to have.

Why, just the other day, I looked in an atlas, and I nearly became a Communist! And don't even get me STARTED on what the internet has done to me.

Yeah, he was ok with semi-naked pictures of her when she was 15- including one where, to put it bluntly, she has her elbow in his crotch- but a highway sign was the problem?

I liked it when Peter Jennings referred to him as Billy Ray Cyprus.

Unfortunately, I fear the atheist community is far too late in this matter. If only we'd acted earlier and more strongly, we might have been able to prevent "Achy Breaky Heart."

Never again, my friends. Never again.

I get disturbed by motorway signs pointing to Birmingham or Kidderminster. I put this down to having been to Birmingham and Kidderminster. Never again, man. Never again.
