So...since their movement has failed to launch isn't the block bot an overt attempt to impose their version of "safe space" on unwary people on Twitter?

(And, I know the forum isn't the movement unless someone talking about something else they've done in another venue then suddenly they are the movement and yell-down the interloper.)

ben radford accused of actual sexual assault.

ETA. wasnt sure if this is the right thread so have started a seperate one on the sbject.

CFI put out a response (although it's down for me at the moment, so I don't know if the link they put on Facebook is right or not, or perhaps the server is down.)

http://www.centerforinquiry.net/pages/cfis_investigation_of_harassment_complaints

Here's the final paragraph until their response is back up and it can be read completely:

One thing we will never do is have our decisions dictated by rumor, gossip, or innuendo, whether it’s directed at the accuser or the accused. Such an approach would be improper and unjust for any organization. For an organization dedicated to promoting critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning, it would be a violation of our guiding principles.

ETA: Seems to be up now.

I know nothing about Ben Radford or this case. Pretty bad if true.

Worse though, if this is as it seems, Internet conviction based on unsubstantiated rumours.

I don't get it. I don't get how someone can post a blog vaguely self-describing harassment then suddenly...torches and pitchforks. Well I get it if I assume group insanity, I just don't like that option.

I also don't get "third party sexual harassment", though...oh, Adria Richards. Well I don't get it when it is a male sailor (who wasn't me) and a female shipyard worker engaging in verbal flirtation when a 3rd party walks-by and gets offended enough to report it but not, maybe, remind the two that they're engaging in unprofessional conduct...oh, Adria Richards.

There's a thread in SI&CE on the situation here. Still a young thread but some good links for further reading, and I suspect the thread is going to grow rather quickly.

Well, well, welll

1. Dr. Stollznow says that she was assaulted at the James Randi Educational Foundation’s (JREF) annual conference, The Amazing Meeting (TAM) on three separate occasions. Dr. Stollznow is a research fellow for the JREF, and is a respected speaker at TAM. The person who she says assaulted her is Ben Radford, another speaker at TAM and a long-time ally of the JREF’s. I am not speaking to the legal validity of these claims, as I have no legal expertise on the matter, but I believe Karen’s account, given the information she’s relayed to me in private, which I won’t recount here.

2. Dr. Stollznow says she made these alleged assaults known to JREF president D.J. Grothe several months ago, but according to Karen, he declined to do anything about the matter.

ETA:It is true that harassment issues are much discussed in some quarters of the skeptics and atheist and other allied movements (all generally for the better, to the extent the emotionally charged issues are tempered with evidence) but to my knowledge there has never been a report filed of sexual harassment at TAM and there have been zero reports of harassment at the TAMs we’ve put on while I’ve been at JREF.

Thanks for that, been reading up and apparently it is not so "unsubstantiated", though in my view not entirely clear yet either.

And thanks also to Tsig, for putting up a post with content.

That statement was made in May, 2012, IIRC. Weren't the alleged incidents at TAM 10, i.e. in July 2012, after DJ's statement?

Would it be fair to say that atheism+/FTB lost it with the big skeptical organizations? After all Skeptic Ink got to be at TAM rather than FTB.
