I don't know about "thin privilege," but "fat shaming" is seen as a real and problematic thing.

Close. What it is, as usual, is that any discussion of obesity is termed "fat shaming" in order to shut down the foolish newb who brings it up.

I was just remembering the discussion that Tsukasa Buddha had on the A-plus forums about veganism mentioned earlier on this thread and I just realised something curious: Instead of just responding to it with "Yes, but I don't see a moral issue with eating meat and I want to continue doing so" it had to be turned into a subject of extreme hand-wringing contention and furious anger.

It's very strange. It seems as though any disagreement is considered to be a personal attack, no matter how mild it may be.

This is an extremely unsafe assumption.

How "safe" is the opposite assumption, that rape is extremely prevalent in Japan (because comics and, um, lack of evidence)? That sounds like Schroedinger's Rapist applied to an entire nation -- except, people keep claiming that SR should not be construed as an accusation against any individual, but now it's okay to declare an entire country a rape culture on that same basis?

I realize my view of Japan is somewhat limited, but when I relayed your previous arguments to a friend of mine who works for a Japanese gaming company he just looked woodenly back at me. Rape is not necessarily analogous to violent crime rates

There's a step missing here. What do you suppose that wooden look (from a privileged male steeped in that supposed rape culture) signified?

thhere's waaaay too much colonialism and white supremacy in our culture to even THINK about addressing the rape culture of asian people, the end. ;)

With TAM upon us once again I was thinking of Girl6 (my roomie at TAM 2 who saved me a couple of hundred bucks) and persons of color in skepticism and Skepchicks (not the TM version).

Is it just me or are all the "leaders" of Women in Skepticism Atheist Social Justice Warriors Who Long Ago Abandoned Skepticism white? Queen Becky. Greta "shoes" Christina. Teary Amy. Where are the speakers of color? Where are those who contribute rather than make a living partying off the donations of sycophants and personality cultists who make them "somebody" when for the most part they're unaccomplished bloggers? Girl6 has accomplished numerous things in life. She supports skepticism. She is a strident atheist. She would be the perfect face and voice of diversity for Women in Skepticism and yet...

It is correct that rape is not certainly analogous to violent crime rates. I do believe there is a connection between the two, however, since rape and violent crime often go up and down in tandem (in part I suppose it depends on what falls under 'what' category et al). This is why I said I did not suspect 'rape' to be an exception thereof, while at the same time I do acknowledge that it can be, but eyeing unoffical or unreported estimates is unfortunately quite problematic and with its own unreliablity. That bit aside, I neither suspect the hentai-tentacle-rape comics of the Japanese to be an expression of actual rape-culture going on unreported behind the scenes in real life. That being said, to add, I also really hope I am correct on that.

My friend is an American. And he was doing the look that pretty much says "this is a stupid argument." Japan's underreporting and issues with reporting being seen as a shame are pretty well known. (Also invented the term christmas cake for unmarried women over a certain age..)

I got the impression Ceepolk (the most mentioned failing moderator at A+) is coloured and female.

My take on it having spent some time in Japan/Korea and Europe/US is that there is a huge cultural difference that leads to behaviour in Japan that Americans would class rape that Japanese people don't.

Its incredibly hard to apply one cultural standard to another, particularly when both man and woman are immersed in that cultural standard.

It freaked me out quite a bit.

Yes, my favorite A+ moderator is a woman of color who's avatar is, appropriately, brown eggs, so her gender and color are important to her identity. I've seen a picture of her. She also bashes white people every chance she gets, which, in SJ calculus, is neither racist nor prejudiced. She's left so many traces on the Internet her home address popped up once when I wasn't even looking for it.

Is Ceepolk a "leader" or just some Internet bully on a web.. let me clarify... or just another woman in skepticism?

The atmosphere on A+ is very 'bullying', classically so. When one of the teachers lambast one of the newly arrived students, it sends a green light flickering for the other senior students to jump in and join the hazing and mobbing. This happens all while they're using the meme of 'my lack of your privilege trumps your privilege, so shut up and contemplate why you are an arse'.

Safe space? Sure, for people who need to gang up on an unsuspecting, unwilling 'punching-bag'.

She's probably the best-known face of A+.

And thus, I grant you, pretty much irrelevant.

Your earlier point taken; those arguing for more diversity are pretty much all middle-class college-educated white people bursting with privilege.

Maybe they could try to persuade Hemant Mehta to join, if he's willing to drop the "Friendly" part of his monicker and to demonise the rest of Patheos as evil misogynist apostates. Good luck with that. ;)

It's not bullying if your cause is just. ;)

The plussers do get a lot of well-deserved criticism for their bad ideas. So I'll be fair and commend them for a good initiative: Collecting money for sending poor minority atheists to college.
