Who is doing the asking can also be a factor. I was at a festival once with a female friend of mine and a guy walking behind and slightly off to the side of us said to her "what a lovely little arse you've got there", she turned round, smiled at him and said "thank you very much". I said that I didn't think that was very like her, and she replied "I was going to tell him to **** off, but then I looked round and he was really hot".

That's the thing we don't have any information about. Maybe this alleged Elevator Guy thought coffee meant coffee. I don't get how the assumption he was even attempting to engage in overt courtship behavior seems to have had been accepted as a given. Intent is a variable in that situation as there's no evidence to the contrary.

That puzzled me too, initially, but apparently inviting someone over for "coffee" late at night has been code for sex for a long time. Who knew, eh?

I'll take it as highly probable that he meant sex, knowing that.

Agreed.

If it were me I also would have had only meant coffee, though I'm happily pair bonded and don't seek extra pair mating opportunities.

I wasn't really disagreeing, just adding to what you said. :)

I'd say the conservatives in the US are the ones most likely to be loudly vocal about it, probably because we are in another period of active social evolution. Most liberal fundies I think simply assume that everyone not outspokenly conservative agrees with them (especially because I think many of them are still in the relative echo chamber of a liberal arts college program).

This, of course, going by my personal experience. :)

That point probably got realistically passed some 150 pages ago, give or take. I expect I'm a lot better at predicting my own behavior than that of some hypothetical, though. The assumption that this random guy was trying to sex RW up as a given vice a variable, the condescension then the following conflagration that contributed to the skeptical travesty that is A+ is still good for passing some time, though, apparently.

PZ Myers is the only really massive draw to FtB.

It’s no secret that Greg Laden was ****-canned from FtB for his violent threats against me. Do you remember the way PZ Myers handled the situation? He posted a public hand-washing of *me* over the disclosure of Laden’s vile words. Always name names (unless it’s when our bff’s do it?)

Staying at FtB after being publicly renounced by the only major draw to the blog network…? **** that.

He’s also a fake. PZ has a “Trophy wife”, has used ‘gendered slurs’ multiple times, such as endorsing the phrase “Science, it works bitches!” as great motto for scienceblogs, etc. Why people think he’s a super feminist ally is beyond me. If he’s only converted to this brand of feminism recently, then why all the overblown hatred for people making the same mistakes he’s made several times? Can’t they too come around?

I recently left this brief summary elsewhere.

PZ posted the day Laden was ****-canned over that incident… PZ publicly washed his hands of me? If PZ had his hands on me for any reason, I’d need a goddamn shower. Did you know that he recommended and linked to cartoons of women being *raped* by octopus-like tentacled animals? He’s made several ‘under the sea’ adult references in his posts over the years.

All apologies for the kink-shaming there, but when your apparent fetish breaks multiple laws in just about every country you don’t get to publicly wash your hands of people. Incredibly, PZ has recently chided the nation of Japan for their ‘rape culture’, pointing to the very rape comics that he previously recommended to his audience.

PZ, stop washing your hands of people. Just wash your hands.

I've been going through withdrawal, too, but it appears the wisest way to handle these people is to ignore them completely (which includes denying them page views).

Last week I read an awesome critique of the schism makers, but thought this thread was dead and now I can't find it to post el enlace. Damn! If I find it, I will share.

My latest thought was how these people are so narcissistic that they think you are some kind of hateful monster if you disagree with them on anything (Lindsay). Their logic seems to work like this: "I'm a brilliant woman, so if you question any of my opinions, you must hate women."

But really, lots of them are Marxists which is how they link atheism with social justice, and their claims to free thought, skepticism, and critical thinking are total hogwash. They are unreflective ideological bullies.

I agree that they are blindly ideological and often behave as bullies, but I'd like some evidence for the highlighted part before I'd consider it even halfway credible.
