Hello everyone, I've been following this thread and its precursors for a while now and finally registered so I could join in.

Welcome Lorentz.

Thar be a little button on the lower right side of a message that says "Quote". Click that and you'll get the entire message of the person you're responding to. Just make sure that you have the [ quote ] and [ / quote ] in tact if you delete a lot of stuff, like I did. (ETA: close up the squared brackets - I put in extra spaces so it wouldn't make a quote box for the word "and".)

You can also put "noparse" tags around stuff when you're giving an example, as you were above. ;)

Also FYI.

To accomplish nested quotes like above use the mail icon in lower left and copy and paste back into thread Reply editor. Don't send the pm.

At least don't send it without getting permission first.

Wait, wrong forum. Carry on.

Much obliged, it seems to work.

:eye-poppi:jaw-dropp:boggled: Anyone know where I can find a used Yerkish keyboard for a good price? Think I'll soon need one. :o:(

Anyway, now I'm done practicing with emoticons in preparation for using my Yerkish terminal, I'll explain the epiphany that made me realize I'm ready for cruzin only the frontage roads. It will soon be 5 years ago I registered here, and countless times when I wanted to include other quotes went to each one and pasted in the previous. 5 years people!! And the kicker? I've often used the same PM copy/paste elsewhere for quoting from closed threads.

Please forgive this OT rant about my declining cognitive privileges. :boxedin:

I'm 70. I was never the sharpest knife in the drawer, but had a good memory. 6 years ago I worked out a system-pentamnemonics-for remembering all 193 countries on the planet. Now I even forget to employ a technique I've used many times. It makes me wonder just how many other things I've missed repeating the same inane, time consuming work arounds.

When I was just a little past 40 I had no problem going into the CPM open source OS of my Osborne 01 and making some p. cool changes. Now I feel like Rip Van Winkle. This message is presented as a cautionary tale folks. Eventually you too may get to where you can hide your own Easter eggs. Gather ye thoughts and store them in the cloud while ye may.

@Mr. Samsa: Haven't had much time last few days to ask some of the questions I have for you, but see others have kept you busy. I hope you come to agree with my perception that there is an interesting aggregation of very aware people participating in this discussion. I am hoping that between you and qwints we can establish some possible common ground. And perhaps if you PMed Apostate and requested he rejoin us itt he would try and make time. Given all the hostility that has transpired I think we're off to a decent start. Miles to go and all, but Rome wasn't .... [/clichesplaining] :)

Some peoples' nuttiness knows no bounds. :D

Maybe it's safe space for the insane?

The A+ forum has indeed made it clear it welcomes people with mental problems.

I have a policy to not debate with people who are mentally ill, so reserve the right to not engage in debate with defenders of A+ in this thread.

... or use the multiquote button next to the quote button, and nest the blocks of text when you respond by clicking the quote button, or Reply at the bottom of the page.

Can't tell if this is ableist or sanesplaining.

In any case you're talking down from Mt. Privilege and are forthwith banned./A+ mod

As I said in the help thread on this topic, a while back:

That's the way I do it, but for completeness you can also fix up the quote link to the outer post you're quoting (see there is no little arrow by the first occurrence of your Lorent'z name in jadey's your example). You can get this by hitting the 'Quote' button for that post, highlight everything from the opening '[' to the first closing ']', then hit Ctrl-C (or whatever does a copy on your computer). Then go back, follow jadey's your instructions, but also replace the opening QUOTE with what you have in your cut buffer (e.g. highlight the [QUOTE] and then Ctrl-V).

Any particular reason for this? How do you determine if someone is mentally ill before you decide to engage in debate with them? Have you vetted everyone in this thread.

I don't know why I bothered typing this, because I have a diagnosed mental illness - so you won't reply.

Be glad you didn't notice any problems until 70. Congratulations!

It's certainly not apparent from your posts, which I find enjoyable to read.

(I sense I hit a sore spot and you're strawmanning me.)

The reason: lessons learned from past experience. There are certain hallmarks to the argumentation style that, once I recognize, I quit and don't care if they think I quit because I lost.

Maybe it's the perception that the opponent isn't actually hearing what I'm saying, or is adding their own obsessive thoughts to mine. E.g. with A+, they seem to be waiting for anyone who disagrees with them to say any innocent thing that will make them pull the trigger on an accusation of racism, sexism, or whatever they have an OCD for. You might call this compulsive strawmanning.

I don't pre-screen who I debate with for signs of mental illness. I'm happy to engage anyone until I see the hallmarks of the types of mental problems that make rational debate impossible.

It's like the old "playing chess with a pigeon" aphorism. When I see droppings on the chessboard and the pieces being knocked over, I walk away from the board and don't care that the bird thought it won.

How's that for not replying?

I think you are conflating mental ill health with ordinary personality and behavioural issues. Many people with mental ill health can have a perfectly rational debate, whilst many people with those traits and behaviours you dislike have no diagnosable mental illness.

Those of us who struggle with real mental health issues don't particularly like being lumped together with internet fanatics.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's not something I would have ever noticed in your posts and only serves as proof, contrary to the Apluswegians claims, that in an environment such as this a mental illness isn't much of a cause for claiming discrimination and victimhood.

IMo the defenders of A+ have been doing a pretty good job in a reciting the writing that's written on the outside of the tin sort of way however it's the getting to the meat of the issues that's proven to be rather difficult.

Take the combating discrimination with more driscrimination tactic that SJWs love to engage in. The giving themselves a pass by claiming they're "punching up" or fighting their struggle with the only weapons they have at their disposal. What they are in effect doing is demanding us "privileged" types leve a lifestyle, adopt attitudes that the SJWs themselves are unable and unwilling to entertain themselves.

Here's a very recent example. We have a caption contest of sorts and PZ Myers pipes up with his entry using a racist slur, ragheads. Comment number 8

Use that term on A+ and watch them break out the lynching rope yet a prominent SJW uses it and it's, I dunno, ironic or satirical or something. I'd expect him to do something like apologize for "slipping into using the dominant cultural narrative" which is the usual SJW tactic when they get caught out expressing those sentiments that they deride everyone else for.

That joke was absolutely in poor taste. I'm surprised no one objected to the use of the slur.

You are surprised that a bunch of yes-men are not calling out their leader? Are you sure that you are an Aplusser?
