Oh? Tell me more!

They do have a thread about an actual charity project they were going to undertake, but it kind of fizzled.

Apparently they had voted to implement one of a number of options, and then somehow got bogged down in having to select one of a number of options all over again. Rather than having a second vote to specify the specifics of the specific they'd specified with the first vote, they just gave up.

Other than that, there have been a few petitions posted, and I seem to recall somebody was totally facebooking an issue. Oh, and of course the complaints about some other charity screwing up.

This is to be understood. Their version of activism, as they've stated, consists of taking things they've learned there and repeating them to someone else. "Social Justice in Action", as one of them put it. The one project that got at least a little traction was their transcribing project. I suppose that's understandable, too. You don't have to leave your computer desk/screen.

I suppose someone else has mentioned it, but it strikes me that A+ is guilty of the anti-intellectual trend that's so common lately in those communities where book learnin' is evidently frowned upon. It's much more common among the right wing, but it's not unheard of on the left. I remember many a coffee shop radical in my day who disparaged the ivory tower revolutionary intellectuals. That's why Che became so popular among the Little Red Book crowd.
Yeah, it's the typical Post-Modernist anti-intellectualism and lauding of subjective personal and group experience as inherently superior to rational objectivity; commonly denying that the latter even exists as anything other than groupthink by a dominant socio-political demographic.

PoMo anti-intellectualism is at least as common on the Left as religious anti-intellectualism is on the Right. It is firmly entrenched in academia, most strongly in the Humanities, but increasingly encroaching into the soft sciences.

Richard Dawkins published a superb critque of Post-Modernism in academia in Nature. The APlussers have simply brought post-modernism to its logical conclusion by taking the tenets of PoMo thought and removed all pretense of academic rigor, deriding the validity of even its own founding philosophers.

I have to say I'm not sure A+ actually organised it but at least one member of the forum was there.

And even that has massive problems - they apparently transcribe anything regardless of author consent and refuse to back down on this.

Ah, there's our Setar:

edit: looked back in the Pharyngula archives, found the videos...I FLIPPED OFF JOHN THE OTHER TODAY AND HELPED TO RIP HIS POSTERS DOWN =D =D -jumps up and down super excitedly and happily-

Well, it's the little things in life that make it all worthwhile, isn't it?

I think (hope) a better analogy would be more like a ten year old losing a tricycle when he has long ago moved on to a two-wheeler like most normal kids.

I can't think of a single thing of value those three could convey to a ten year old. I'll stick with the fish analogy. Scum sucking, bottom feeding fish. :D

Does not follow. There are times when "stupid" is exactly what I want to say.

Precisely! There is no substitute in the English language for the word ******* so obviously there are going to be times when that word needs to be used. With A+ there will be a lot of those times.

Did anybody else notice that the women are standing on the sidelines filming (clearly terrified of this guy), while the men have been sent in to do the actual poster removal? That's real equality, ladies!

So, I wonder which one is Setar? The loon talking all that jibber-jabber about "frameworks of emotions" or something?

Ditto that last question... would anyone recognize Setar from posts or other sources? Zoon's (I'm inventing my own pronouns, now) post says zeep was there and "flipped the finger". That could mean, zeep showed up for moral support or that zeep was the provocateur. That guy seemed far too under control to be Setar, though, based on zoon's posts.

"See, setting up that contrast, where stupid is the opposite of smart, really doesn't reassure me. That is still reinforcing the idea that "stupid" is bad and "smart" is good.

Perish the thought. Maybe smart is bad and stupid is good, eh qwint? Can't really trust those left wing intellectuals like you. I know you're a lot smarter than me, but a 70 I have over 4 decades of that authority enabling experience on you. It worked for Bush, twice.

The idea that intelligence is a single axis that determines human worth deserves to be attacked. I think the thread contained a lot of good points about the cultural biases inherent in words like stupid.

And even that has massive problems - they apparently transcribe anything regardless of author consent and refuse to back down on this.

That's not true.

Notice to scribes: Do not transcribe a source until you have permission. If in doubt, please email a.plus.scribe (at) gmail.com

But I thought Atheism+ was against tone policing! What if I strongly feel that somebody is stupid? I can't express that feeling by calling them stupid?

Well, you go right ahead and attack whomever/wherever that argument shows up. I don't see anyone arguing that it's the single axis. (Correct me if I'm wrong. I miss things.)

Stupid is a perfectly cromulent word. If you can come up with something that can take its place, I'm all ears. Every other synonym I can come up with seems like putting a little frosting on "stupid" and claiming that that's a better solution. I asked above, does anyone think that "maintenance engineer" really gives someone more self-respect and the warm-and-fuzzies any more than "janitor"? Do we really think we can remove "person" from describing a person with autism? What are we talking about? An autistic tree? Do you actually find that putting the word person in the expression somehow separates the subject's "personhood" from their "autism".

Further, the sort of language policing being proposed generally assumes that the user doesn't actually understand the negative connotations of the term being used. Really? Does anyone not understand that saying someone is stupid is an insult, or that saying that their post or their theory or their term paper is stupid is not more of the same?

"Don't call me stupid! That's an outmoded and negative term, based on separating those with intelligence from those without."

"Yeah, I know. And?"

So, I guess I'm biased. I can't abide stupid people. I do agree that it's a rather personal word, though. Not so much as "personal insult" as that's patently obvious, since it's generally meant as an insult. It's personal insofar as we all have different concepts as to what makes up "stupid". It's sort of like modern art... I know it when I see it.

These nitpicks over language have value up to a point. Someone who uses "broad" to describe women and thinks that's acceptable, probably needs to have a (figurative, of course, as I'm a borderline pacifist) little soft shoe routine done on his wind pipe. But some of the current debate/discussion seems to be all based on SJ oneupsmanship.

And my dad deserted us and my mom used to beat me, so I call trumps on "personal experience" and calling people "stupid" is the only normative experience I have on some days.

>>>> I win! <<<<

Note: Even if used improperly, as above, for maximum A+ SJ points, always try to fit "normative" into any complaint.

And they all freak out and run away when the cops come. If they new what they were doing was legal why wouldn't they stay around?

Let's all scour the dictionary for words we can use to try and bolster our position. It doesn't matter how tenuous or ambiguous the connection may be to teh patriarchy or "cultural biases" or oppression or <insert feminism/gender studies etc 101 theory>. You will find a way to make that connection.

Seriously, these people need to grow up.

Just in case anyone's interested in losing a couple of brain cells quickly and without the aid of alcohol - though you might need a drink or two to read it, so on second thoughts....
