At least 25 dead, multiple injured and missing in suspected Arson attack in Japan

CNN Tokyo - At least 25 people have died in a suspected arson attack at a renowned animation studio in the Japanese city of Kyoto on Thursday, according to police.

The death toll at the Kyoto Animation Co. building is expected to rise and the city's fire department said that 36 people were injured in the blaze, some critically.

A Kyoto prefectural police spokesperson said a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the attack also had a backpack containing several knives. The suspect poured what appeared to be gasoline around the studio and set it on fire.

The suspect is currently in hospital with serious burn injuries and police do not expect to be able to question him on Thursday.

Some outlets are reporting 33 confirmed dead, others still 25.

I'm not 100% sure about this but a few sources have mentioned in passing that Japanese authorities often use very specific phrasing for victims who are dead but who haven't been declared dead in a legal sense yet.

Again this is all in the moment reporting so obviously keep your critical thinking hats on but BBC is reporting one witness who heard the man yelling "You ripped me off" and "You copied me" and apparently they have confirmed the man isn't a current or former employee of the studio.

You're WAAAAY off the mark here. The work environment in Japan in not at all like this.

From the description of the studio, this was one of the more employee friendly ones. Still i read that there was no obvious fire-escape stairs visible from the outside, which could've seriously limited any emergency escape routes.

Given that the arsonist was also burned I’m gonna go with ‘crazy man with knife, possibly also on fire, keeping people from the entrances’.
