In a moment that is reminiscent of the final episode of Mary Tyler Moore John Ashcroft has stepped down. An interesting quote from him though:

"I take great personal satisfaction in the record which has been developed. The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved. The rule of law has been strengthened and upheld in the courts. Yet, I believe that the Department of Justice would be well served by new leadership and fresh inspiration."

Would any of you guys take great personal satisfaction in his record?

I'd be amused if people elected a corpse instead of me, but I doubt Ashcroft found that funny.

My general response to Ayatollah Ashcroft's departure is simple.

"Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Instead, let me stand behind it so I can slam it shut on your fundie ass."

I voted for that corpse. 'course, the joke was on me when it left Ashcroft's schedule open when Bush called.

I'm not sure, but I think posting obscene material is against forum rules.

Look, guys, when Bush gets to appoint new justices, Ashcroft doesn't matter, and it's even harder to undo the undermining of the constitution.

Ashcroft is gone because he doesn't matter any more.

Him and Janet Reno are going to have new Odd Couple Sitcom.

He is going to be the straitlaced non-dancing roomate and she is going to be the cult killing slob. However, every week the neighbors are going to think he is the bad one due to hilarious shenanigans.

In the final episode, Ashcroft's wacky scheme to hide in the big drum at Reno's concert goes horribly awry when he suffocates.

So did I. Republicans say it was a sympathy vote. Not me. I thought the corpse would do a better job. He said things that would make Strom Thurmand roll over in his grave.

Didn't you crap your pants the day you found out where he wound up?

So what do you suppose he will do now? Put his white hood back on and retire?

Didn't trials and juries have something to do with justice before Ashcroft came on the scene and helped recommend and adopt the more expedient 'round them up in bulk and throw them in prison camps and torture them' scheme?

Most likely, some gruesome stink (covered up for and delayed by the election) is about to burst like a festering boil in Washington, and he'll duck some of the more awful fallout by getting some distance between himself and his friends there, who'll also take less heat as a result for his absense.

Easier to kick back and turn off the radio than try to hold down your job when all heck breaks loose and you're in the middle of it.

Easier for his friends to say "That was Ashcroft's baby. He doesn't work here anymore."

My wife is betting that, baring health problems, he's going to run for one of Missouri's congressional positions.

I am just glad to hear that "The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved".

I haven't heard news this good since President Ford announced that Eastern Europe wsno longer under Soviet domination.

It's even better than the time Al Gore invented the Internet.

Of course one of the last things he'll do is prosecute a case against some MD for aiding and abetting Oregon's assisted suicide law, passed by a wide margin of voters in that state.

White-house is trying to skirt the issue by making it about drug control ...novel rove approach, dontcha think? But don't answer yet ............there's more to come campers!

Where are the reactionaries who moan about the COURTS legislating from the bench??? States Rights???

Ah, those things only count when the states in question choose the correct option. It's not about the means, it's about the ends. Hence, torture is okay if it's us doing it, but it's a deplorable outrage if the enemy does.
