As heat wave continues California prepares for power blackouts

It seems that with the heat wave continuing and tomorrow promising 44-45C temperatures officials are worried that electricity will be stretched to the limit. On Monday power demand almost outstripped supply.

This continues to highlight the ongoing problem in California of continued population growth with no new power plant construction. Excess demand is usually alleviated by buying power from out of state but with the heatwave suffocating the entire southwest this will not be an option.

If they institute rolling blackouts tomorrow I will be pretty pissed.
 
Yeah, I'm not particularly worried about the people down on the coast. Tens of millions of us live inland and around here it is damned hot.

I'll take rolling blackouts over fried grid any day.

There was a flex alert yesterday, which had been predicted to be the hottest day, but now it's looking like more of the same right through the 4th. The decision to permanently close San Onofre was announced nearly a month ago, and then, a week ago, one of the reactors at Diablo Canyon was taken offline due to a small radiation leak. They say they have completed that repair and are in the testing phase, but aren't sure exactly when they'll have it back in operation. Today would be nice. Yesterday, it was too hot to swim. Still, they're saying that peak demand stayed under the all-time record of 50,270 MW set in July 2006 -- and that's with the extra AC load typical for the first day of a work week following a hot weekend, when buildings have had time to build up a lot of thermal inertia. Maybe that flex alert system is doing some good.

It seems reasonable to expect problems with actually obtaining the promised power purchased from other states when they are also being impacted by the heat wave, but last I heard (and that was after the Diablo Canyon incident) CAL-ISO was still saying that the state's power supply was in good shape -- so I'd be interested in seeing your sources.

It's probably worth noting that records have also been broken for solar generation. We need more of that. The solar panels on my roof are more than enough to run the (very efficient) fridge and AC, but as it's a grid-connected system, if the grid goes down, the electricity generated by those panels goes... somewhere. Never have been clear on that. To ground?

I've been getting up early (real early; like 3:30 - 4 o'clock in the morning) so as to take advantage of the cool of the morning (which is like 75º F this morning). Open the windows, fans on low for an hour or so to get some fresh air into the place while I do whatever work needs done. Middle of the day is for sleeping. Basic desert survival strategy.

Yesterday, necessity forced me to make a trip to the store during the hottest part of the day. Reminded me why I no longer live in Phoenix. I passed up an excellent deal in the meat department because it required a minimum purchase of five items. I figure it's a better time to be stocked up on bottled water and canned fruit than frozen meat.

Are you trying to confuse the Americans among us with those Celsius numbers. Reminds me of when our thermometer started showing Celsius and we could not figure out how to change it.

It can get hot in the Central Valley I worked a few summers on a farm there. Especially if a tractor just turned the damp ground over where you have to work. Then the dry heat becomes a humid one.
 
Well it looks like we lucked out a bit. The intense heat actually created a monsoon effect.
 
I got a text that we were supposed to be having a Power Flex day today. Didn't matter for me, I was at the DMV anyway.

66% humidity here. Blech.
 
It's been cooler than forecast here in the Inland Empire. With temps only in the low 80s, I should be able to turn off the AC, but the humidity is keeping my windows shut.

You'd think, with our 78 solar panels, we'd be exempt from rolling blackouts, but nope, if SCE turns the power out, we go too.

Pretty o/t, but unless you have batteries then my (uneducated) guess is that your panels feed the grid and the system allows you power credit in return. But the grid would need to be 'on' .... is that how it works?

I was going to post a whine about our 36°C (98F) heatwave a while back but then saw the Phoenix temperatures :eek:

We're used to it. I'm happy to go ride my bike in 43 C weather, although I do have icewater in my Camelback pack. I do try to avoid the direct sun from about 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM more from concern about skin cancer (highest rate in the US), but really it's hottest here from about 4-6 PM. Around here we call 36C sweater weather (kidding, but only barely; we won't go below that for the high more than a few times from about late May to mid October).
 
I know, it cooled off to about 35C last night and compared to the day time temperature it was positively cold feeling.
 
Yesterday here in Wales at the height of summer the maximum temperature was 14C (58F). That said, our national energy strategy is so knackered that we too may be subjected to rolling brown-outs.

Yeah, that's how it works. The grid itself becomes the storage medium. The power companies don't want juice being fed into the grid during an outage, mainly because their guys out working on the lines could potentially get lit up.

I'd still like to know what happens to the surplus energy when the grid is down. Not sure if that's even a meaningful question. Maybe it's like asking where the electricity goes when you switch off a light. I guess what I'm really curious about is what it would take to convert a grid-connected system to battery storage, say in the face of a regional power outage. Okay, say in the face of an outage that had the potential to be of indefinite duration (possibly even permanent, at least as far as full restoration to reliable power 24/7 was concerned). I guess a guy who knew what he was doing could hook a bunch of batteries up to a different inverter spliced in upstream of the (fancy and expensive) ones required for grid connection (due to the fussy requirements of the power companies). For all that, I don't see why a system couldn't be designed to switch automatically between grid connected and battery storage depending on whether the grid was up or down; be pretty expensive, though.

I like to keep my gas tank full when I consider power outages to be likely. Not very efficient to use an automobile as a generator alone, but in a pinch, it's one way to keep the cell phone charged at least. I actually have an 12v DC to 120v AC inverter I can plug into my cigarette lighter (or, alternatively, clamp to my car's battery), and it can put out enough to run a small appliance, but it sucks the battery down quick if the engine's not running. Of course, a guy's not going to be sitting in a non-running car for very long anyway with the kind of temperatures we've been seeing. If nothing else, cruise the boulevard just for the AC. Could be a lifesaver if you're delicate.
 
I would like to get an ultra-quiet generator for our earthquake/power outage kit. The generator we have sounds like a jackhammer. Problem is, the ultra-quiet ones are also ultra-expensive.

I'm having a hard time seeing that as lucky. I enjoy a nice thunderstorm as much as the next guy, but the dry lightning we're expecting toward evening has us under a red flag warning. I also don't find heat and humidity to be a winning combination from a comfort standpoint.

I agree. My father-in-law lives up in the high desert and fond of saying "it's 120, but it's a dry heat". He has a point. Humidity plus heat is worse than heat alone.
 
My Philadelphia upbringing has led me to feeling that warm without humid is not hot. At one point when I worked in CA several of my co-workers complained about how hot it was. I went outside and felt the sun was toasty but otherwise was fine. I checked the temperature and found it was in the upper 90's, which in Philadelphia means you are swimming in humidity - the Monteray Bay not so much.
