I was made aware of this article by a friend, and wanted to post it here.

I'm already sure just the fact it's national review will mean some won't even give it the time of day, but it really sums up exactly how I feel about the entire Palin situation, and how the left behaves politically. Engaging in the politics of personal destruction at all times, and viciously.

It's written by a conservative, but written in a style as if he was a liberal. It's a parody, but much of it reads just like actual posts on these very forums.

I'd like to hope it would shame some on the left, but I suspect that many won't even read it. But you should. Because it's spot on.

Not only were we offended at the sheer effrontery of McCain’s pick: How dare the Republicans proffer this déclassée piece of Wasilla trailer trash whose only claim to fame was that she didn’t exercise her right to choose? Where were her degrees from Smith or Barnard, her internships at PETA, the Brookings Institution, or the Young Pioneers? We were also outraged that the Stupid Party had just nominated a completely unqualified candidate nobody had ever heard of, a first-term governor of Alaska whose previous experience consisted of a small-town mayoralty. As opposed to our guy, Barry Soetoro of Mombasa, Djakarta, and Honolulu, a first-term senator nobody had ever heard of, whose previous experience had been as a state senator (D., Daley Machine) in Illinois. After eight long, illegitimate, lawless years of &*^%BUSH$#@! tyranny, how dare you contest this election?

And so the word went out, from that time and place: Eviscerate Sarah Palin like one of her field-dressed moose. Turn her life upside down. Attack her politics, her background, her educational history. Attack her family. Make fun of her husband, her children. Unleash the noted gynecologist Andrew Sullivan to prove that Palin’s fifth child was really her grandchild. Hit her with everything we have: Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, taking a beer-run break from her quixotic search for Mr. Right to drip venom on Sister Sarah; post-funny comic David Letterman, to joke about her and her daughters on national television; Katie Couric, the anchor nobody watches, to give this Alaskan interloper a taste of life in the big leagues; former New York Times hack Todd “Mr. Dee Dee Myers” Purdum, to act as an instrument of Graydon Carter’s wrath at Vanity Fair. Heck, we even burned her church down. Even after the teleological triumph of The One, the assault had to continue, each blow delivered with our Lefty SneerTM (viz.: Donny Deutsch yesterday on Morning Joe), until Sarah was finished.

etc...

To be honest, I do wish more politicians received the treatment that Sarah Palin found during her brief tenure with federal politics. Popular action demonstrated how easily a politician's career could be destroyed, though we still find the corrupt and inept in our systems.

Or maybe Palin was just an incredibly poor pick as Veep..someone without the knowledge or experience for the White House.
But no, it was all a plot by the Evil Liberal Media to destroy poor Sarah.

The only problem with that article is that most of the Palin-bashers around here will think he was too nice to Sarah.

ETA: Uggh, and in the second half he indulges himself in little Obama Birtherism.

I think the Palin faithful are just whiny because the elephant in the room was that these were all qualities of the guy leading the other ticket that the media was fairly silent on in contrast.

I think they have a legitimate beef. But hey, life ain't fair. Sarah fumbled every ball that was passed to her. She had plenty of opportunities to shine since the media spotlight was on her constantly.

seriously.....americans listen up. I know its hard to take sometimes but the candidate was simply LAUGHABLE. Basically, the whole episode made you all look silly. The world wasn't laughing with you they were laughing at you.

When she was picked it was Sarah Who? From Where? ~of course the national press would be in a rush to find out about this new star, get into the meat of her credentials, find out just why McCain picked her from out of the thin air of Wasilla.

And, finding not much there, a disturbing lack of anything stellar, there was much criticism. Why is anyone surprised? Why Why Why?

Why must she try to play the maverick who is the poor victim?

It's the Great Maverictim!

Seriously, that article was really whiney.

Look, I think, to be frank, the media does tend to be tougher on Conservatives then Liberals. But,frankly, Palin deserved most of the heat and ridicule she got. To write off the negative converage to some kind of Liberal Snobbishness (and I agree that it does exist) is silly and desperate.
The GOP picked a cruddy candidate for Veep. End of discussion.

Weren't you just criticizing Tom Tomorrow in another thread for putting words in the mouths of conservatives?

2. His "jokes" are mostly (as in this case) based on "Wouldn't it be funny if Republicans said this." In other words, he poses strawman arguments

I'll just pick out a few points:

- It's a bit weird to give too much credit or blame to Palin for the acceptance speech, which was largely written before she was selected as the VP candidate.

- It's also weird to imply that what was done to Palin is somehow different from what happens to every presidential and vice presidential candidate every four years.

- It's weird to imply that Andrew Sullivan and David Letterman are on the left.

- It's weird that the same article that implies there's something improper about this: "Attack her politics, her background, her educational history. Attack her family. Make fun of her husband, her children." also includes this: "Maureen Dowd ... taking a beer-run break from her quixotic search for Mr. Right ... post-funny comic David Letterman ... Katie Couric, the anchor nobody watches ... former New York Times hack Todd “Mr. Dee Dee Myers” Purdum," and wraps up by describing the Democratic party as "a criminal organization masquerading as a political party."

While it's true that Palin got, and gets, elitist and sexist barbs sent her way (note the latest atrocity from WaPo's Richard Cohen, referring to her as a "ditz"), her defenders use that as a cover to ignore the legitimate criticisms --

Sarah Palin is corrupt politician.
She is entirely ignorant and uncurious about all the issues for which a politician on the national stage is responsible to understand.
She is a religious freak.
She uses her underage children as political props.
She got on an airplane for a 10 hour journey while leaking amniotic fluid, about to give birth to a child with Downs Syndrome.
She is a pathological liar, speaking untruth about things that are instantly verifiable (far beyond what I consider to be the typical lying of a politician).

Sarah Palin is corrupt politician.

Perhaps. The evidence is largely circumstantial.

She is entirely ignorant and uncurious about all the issues for which a politician on the national stage is responsible to understand.

Ohhh yes.

She is a religious freak.

Definitely.

She uses her underage children as political props.

Doesn't seem to be that uncommon.

She got on an airplane for a 10 hour journey while leaking amniotic fluid, about to give birth to a child with Downs Syndrome.

A rather strange scenario.

She is a pathological liar, speaking untruth about things that are instantly verifiable (far beyond what I consider to be the typical lying of a politician).

Not sure about this one as well.

I think she's just unsuited for federal politics. She sure does seem full of herself. If she quit, and doesn't return to politics, good for her. If she does return to politics.. Aie.

Could someone explain to me why an eltist attiude toward candidates for the highest ellected offices in our nation is bad? I want the best people, not the folks-y-est.

Seconded.

However, others have responded that in the past, it was the best-of-the-best who got us into wars and other troubles...

If she becomes President, she will have fulfilled H.L. Mencken's prediction:

"The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

Much as I disparaged Dubya's intelligence, he wasn't half as stupid as this moron. She is, indeed, a woman of the people.
