Are we genetically wired to fear large empty spaces?

There is a very large old house here in COnyers Ga. The house is supposed to be haunted. I personally have been in every nook and cranny of this building and I have to admit to a bit of apprehension. I think humans are genetically wired to feel a bit of apprehension when we explore large empty spaces. I doubt if I could have explored this building had it not been lit up in every room upstairs and down.

I think we are hard wired for fear of the unknown, which might have been what you were experiencing rather than a direct reaction to the space itself

Inside any building is a much smaller space than what we were always in for most of our evolution.

I was under the impression it's the opposite: we're hardwired to favour more space.

Crowding is highly correlated with stress.

I think yes we are. Whenever I contemplate the vast vacant empty space in between the ears of vaccine deniers/Holocaust deniers/religious idiots/right wing politicians like farage and people who think they speak to the dead-I'm terrified.

The large space between my outgoings and my income is a constant source of unease for me.
