Not during their lifetimes. Impressionism (Monet) was a term coined as an insult. I suspect the same is true for cubism. "That's not art".
Miles Davis, Coltrane, Bird, etc all got "that's not music". Hard to imagine now.
Dear god no. I hope curators never do this. Because then you'll end up with Elvis on velvet as art. Like music, most people have terrible taste in art.
I wouldn't. I always want to be challenged by the newest works. Just like with music.
Most people enjoy a warm, sunny day. Others, like yourself, enjoy baseball sized hail. I get what you are saying about being challenged. Being challenged can produce a few diamonds every once in a while. Many dirt clods must be sifted through to find those diamonds. There are many artists who run the fringe of people's expectations. Some of these artists will eventually become mainstream and appreciated widely. Pollock is in a strange place as 99% of the unwashed masses consider his work dirt clods while the other 1% think he's a genius. A good craftsman can build a house that is pleasing to the eye. A good house painter can produce crisp parting lines that are a mark of a job welll done. Pollock's works to my eye show neither craftsmanship or conceptual theme. I would be impressed if a monkey drew them, not so much seeing as a human did.
