Once Cambridge resolved to make Arday a celebrity, at the very least they should have assigned him a TA whose entire job was to insulate him from direct contact with negative social media.

Alternatively, they could've applied the same academic standards to him that they do to ordinary fellows of Anglo Saxon extraction and then noticed his distinct lack of potential for knowledge production.

Not Anglo-Saxon knowledge, or Anglo-Saxon production, but that's not what Cambridge wanted from him.

And this is why I say I think he did earn his credentials. Mainly by showing willingness to spout the kind of nonsense that he put in his CV.

sadly it seems that even the University of London has its share of frauds. Anyone remember this guy who presided over numerous papers containing frauds. He got away with it and blames the underlings of course, but doesn’t that only mean he was facilitating shoddy scholarship like Cambridge was with Arday?

I don't believe Cambridge needed to monitor Arday for casual boasting unrelated to his academic work.

It's not about what you meant to include, it's about what you ended up defending.

I was defending the idea that Arday should be held to ordinary academic standards.

Passing off work from Zwozdiak-Myers as his own is not defensible in a ordinary student essay, much less a Ph.D. dissertation.

This entire tragic series of events could've been headed off back in 2015.

Yeah, anyone actually interested in securing the best person for a position should be applauding efforts to increase diversity so that you don't just have white men hiring other white men (or, increasingly, white men and women). This means a massively larger pool of candidates, after all.

Not per se, but:
1. It's also not their job to defend him when the press has a field day with his being an over-the-top pathological liar.
2. Nor to defend him when someone else gets "well, what else did he lie about?" ideas, and uncovers that, yeah, he did lie about relevant stuff like previous work experience.
3. Nor to ignore it if the guy just plain old sucks at his job as a professor.

“Fraud” is any activity that relies on deception in order to achieve a gain. Fraud becomes a crime when it is a “knowing misrepresentation of the truth or concealment of a material fact to induce another to act to his or her detriment” (Black’s Law Dictionary).

I would argue that it was definitely to the university's detriment, hence criminal. But even without it being criminal, "any activity that relies on deception in order to achieve a gain" amply covers it, since getting straight to being a professor and media darling is a gain.
