Eyewitness evidence is notoriously unreliable. They'd been trained to think of Germany as a potential enemy, so some saw German planes.

You can see the stuff left on the moon by the Apollo missions, from earth, with a not very expensive telescope.
 
But you can still bounce a laser off the retro reflectors placed by the Apollo crews. And we did get about 30 gigabits of lovely science telemetry from the RTG-powered ALSEP observatories they also set up. This was received by tracking stations around the world, up until 1977 when the ALSEPs were finally decommissioned. A lot of people don't realize Apollo was actively returning science data for years after A17 departed.

No, that's incorrect, but the LRO can. Of course, the die hards and charlatans would probably still deny the historical reality, even if you flew their butts to the Moon and landed them at an Apollo landing site. A couple of them, I'd probably just drop them off without a space suit!:desmile:;)

1. In 1941 very few American civilians would have known anything about what Japanese bombers looked like.

2. The war in Europe had been going for over 12 months during which time the Battle of Britain had taken place

3. American civilians would have seen plenty of German bombers in newsreel footage on TV and in Cinemas.

..... then it not unreasonable for witnesses not trained in Aircraft Recognition to mistake some Japanese bombers for German ones, e.g a Kate or a Val for a Stuka.

Heck, just considering all the panicky AA gunners who opened up on friendly aircraft after recognition training, it's no wonder civilians would misidentify aircraft types. Even Allied pilots thought the Japanese were flying Bf-109s after seeing their first Ki-61s. And I read about a flight of RAF A-36s being bounced over England by Jugs because they mistook them for Messerschmitts. Fortunately they saw the roundels before they shot any down. But they still put some holes in them.

In the South-East Asia Theatre, Allied aircraft often had the red spot in the centre of their roundel painted out, like this,

In the beginning NASA used studios to fake moon landings because they still needed to develop skills in rocket technology.

In the last years the only skills that NASA developed was Photoshop & Co. to land on Mars, deep impacts on comets, etc.
