Ant Crystals

One of the weirder crystal healing woos I've come across, the one who channels the Goddess Bridgit, writes about "ant crystals" which she says are found outside anthills. She reminds her readers to ask the ants' permission before taking them. Cute.

So: is there some sort of crystal you find outside anthills? Why? What are they? Does this have something to do with uric acid? (guessing wildly).

And most important of all: how do you tell if the ants have given permission?

(Visions of enraged ants turning on the world's supply of woowoos. And eating them... hey, a man can dream.)

Ant hill crystals expand and awaken the mind and soul through memory. These stones may be found at any ant hill; the bigger the ants the larger the crystals. North and South American shamans use ant hill crystals in their medicine bags and rattles in order to remain in contact with the spirits.

In ants, the main component of urine is whitish crystals of uric acid

Woochick: Pardon me, Mr. Ant, sir?

Ant #4562: Yes?

Woochick: I greet you as a fellow being on this, our mother planet, and I honor and respect you as a noble example for all of us, god's children, in the ways of diligence and...

Ant #4562: Look, is this going to go on much longer? Only, I've got a lot of bits of leaves and things to get into this hill...

Woochick: I beg your forgiveness, Mr. Ant, sir, but...

Ant #4562: Is there going to be a point to all this exhalation?

Woochick: I would like to humbly beg your permission to remove some of your mystic anthill crystals. If it's not a bother.

Ant #4562: These crystals? These white ones, on the ground?

Woochick: Well, yes.

Ant #4562: Sure. As many as you'd like. Take them all.

Woochick: Bless you, Mr. Ant, sir. All the bleesings of the goddess and the moon...

Ant #4562: Right. I have work to do, you have fun.

Woochick begins reverently harvesting the crystals.

Ant #4562: Look, that's our urine, you do realise?

Woochick: What?

Ant #4562: I'm just saying, those crystals aren't so much mystical as they are pee-pee.

Woochick: I... I don't understand.

Ant #4562: Waste product. Uric acid. Most assuredly not cosmic in any sense.

Woochick: Well, you see blah blah blah... Lady said blah blah blah... Very spiritual blah blah blah...

Ant #4562: Right. well, we'll be discarding some old pupae cases later on, did you want those as well?

Woochick storms off in a huff.

Ant #4562: Wait till I tell the boys down the pub.

If one messes with the fire ants down here, those ants will certainly "expand and awaken the mind and soul" of that individual.

Oh, yes.

Oh, yes.

After a nasty mishap with fire ants while living in the backwaters of Tennessee, I can say with full authority that fire ants are The Ultimate Evilâ„¢. :o

As for "ant crystals" being uric acid...

:dl:

The uric acid in ant urine is excreted along with feces, making "brown smears" according to the Ant Colony website. Which means that the "ant crystals" that you find on the fringes of anthills are not uric acid.

is there some sort of crystal you find outside anthills?
Yes, actually, there is. Ants in certain locales (Arizona) are famous for bringing up tiny garnets with their excavated dirt.

Which is almost certainly where your Woo got her "ant crystals" factoid.

But as for asking the ants for permission, well, it's probably going to be trickier persuading them to part with garnets. I mean, if it was just crystallized pee, they'd probably pay you to take the stuff away, but garnets fetch a not-bad price in the semi-precious gemstone market, so you might have to dicker a bit...

Well, I went back to the original text, and she says that they're white or beige. So she's probably not thinking of garnets.

Well, duh. You didn't get their permission, did you!

I suppose I didn't. I don't think fire ants give permission to take anything, or even be near them though.

They're still the Ultimate Evilâ„¢. They're only a half-step below Pat Robertson, in my opinion...

Well, yeah, but what I meant was, she might have heard the factoid "ants bring gemstones up to the surface" and extrapolated from "gemstones" to "crystals", and "crystals" are usually white, like salt or sugar, thus she ends up with, "white" or possibly "beige" crystals. Light-colored, that is.

And of course it's entirely possible that she simply doesn't know what garnets are. They're not in fashion much; the fashionable semi-precious gems nowadays are blue topaz and aquamarine and citrine.

Or, Occam would say she was more likely thinking of pee.

We're talking about ant urine? This thread is way too surreal for me...

To me, the whole woo-woo world is too surreal. But it's quite fun debating it!
