Another School Shooting

Sounds like you don't want to solve it.

Nah, I just see that mass school shootings are very rare. A child is more likely to be hit by lightening. And it was already illegal for this kid to have a gun.

Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in the US. Far more common than lightning strikes.

Well, abortion is the leading cause. But, anyway. Mass shootings at school are very rare. If by gun violence you mean all the bang-bang in Chicago or Baltimore, that is a problem. But we're not allowed to talk about that.

Father of shooter arrested and charged

Hell to the yes:

Colin Gray, 54, is being charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children, GBI said. The shooting suspect has been charged with four counts of felony murder.

(snip)

Police and federal agents were investigating if the weapon used in the shooting, described by officials as an AR-style weapon, was purchased by the teen's father as a gift for his son in December 2023, according to four federal law enforcement sources close to the investigation.

In May of last year, the suspect and his father were both interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff's office after the FBI received tips about online posts threatening a school shooting, the FBI said in a statement Wednesday night. At the time, investigators didn't have enough evidence for an arrest or enough probable cause "to take any additional law enforcement action," the FBI said.

What do you do when the police come and tell you that your son has been posting mass shooting threats online? You tell them he has no access to guns, and then proceed to buy him an AR-15 for Christmas. 10/10, no notes.

Actually, as a meteorologist I happen to know the statistics; on average 5 children a year in the US are killed by lightning, whereas the average for kids killed in school shootings is around 20 over the past decade. So--4 times more likely to be shot. And more importantly, there's not alot we can do to reduce the lightning fatalities, we can do something to reduce school shootings.

I don't know about that. If the AR 15 was not a powerful weapon for Military Purposes, it,in it's varous versions, would not have been the standard firearm for the US Military for over 50 years. And it will still be widely used, although it is being replaced for Infantry by the Sig Sauer rifle.I see no reason why a civilian should own one, though.
It's effectiveness is not because it's got a massive bullet and cartridge.
The improvements in body armor have meant the next generation of weapons that replace the AR-15 now need more power behind the bullet. Most civilians won't be wearing buddy armour.

That the father would buy his son an AR-15 (or similar) when he KNEW his son had been investigated for making school shooting threats online last year is beyond stupid. I hope he gets the same sentence as the Crumleys: 10-15 years in prison. Or more.

The AR15 is not actually very powerful. What it is, is it is designed to be an effective anti-personell killing device. It is relatively small but rapid fire, even in semi-automatic mode, the bullets are designed to be most effective against people and it can carry a large capacity magazine. It is much more effective than a handgun but more convenient than a conventional rifle with a higher caliber round with a longer, more accurate and powerful barrel.

Its powerful enough to kill, and to mangle the bodies of small children so badly that they become unrecognizable. The 19 victims of the Uvalde shooting were identified by DNA to prevent authorities having to identify them by showing parents what the bodies of their children looked like (which is what happened at Sandy Hook). However, some of them had to be identified by DNA. I hope I don't have to explain why that was - I think y'all are smart enough to work that out for yourselves.

Not following what the "power" of the weapon has to do with the killing of school children. It was obviously plenty powerful enough.

Sadly, as ever it seems it is much more important to discuss the technical detail of firearms, the murders are just a pesky unimportant detail, what is important is to know a AR15 can't penetrate the latest military body armour so why do you consider it a powerful murder weapon?

Pretty sure he is just saying that the AR is not a good hunting or sport shooting rifle. It's pretty much is what it's designed to be: a lightweight all-purpose anti-personel weapon. If you have one, your interest is less for hunting and sport shooting, and more on the anti-personel side.

I get it now. The perfect birthday gift for a 14yo mentally deficient American male.

Word. Especially one recently questioned by the FBI for threatening to shoot up a school using a screen name that was the Russian characters for the Sandy Hook shooters name. Nope, no red flags there.

Republicans in Congress are, coincidentally, saying enough is enough on this issue. They are currently working on speeches for the funerals to the effect of "this kind of thing really doesn't happen that often, so you really need to quit your bitching about every little pile of corpses in a school".

How about "I don't like that this is a fact of life."

Yet you've been doing jack **** to change that, haven't you?
