My buddy Vlad the Mad Mk II just cannot be kept out of the papers.*

Even when he isn't arranging for journalists to be shot, he still makes the news as Boris Berezovsky speaks to the Guardian in England, about his plans to overthrow Putin by force.

He has no chance, but I find it interesting that after ignoring Vlad the Mad Mk II for several years, the newspapers are waking up to him, giving prominence to the story.

* I don't think he's at all mad, actually, I just think his right-wing policies are a little reminscent of the original Vlad the Mad. (Zhirinovsky)

What makes his politics right wing?
Yeah, I was wondering that. Since when is government takeover of oil companies a right-wing practice? Next we'll be hearing how Hugo Chavez is a right-winger.

Maybe TA is talking about murdering your political opponents, like that other noted Russian right-winger, Joseph Stalin.

My favorite Stalin quote:
"I don't trust anyone, not even myself."

I was wondering if he was anti-abortion, pro-school prayer, anti-flag burning, anti-gay mariage... :)

Picky, picky!

Replace "right-wing" with "fascist" then.

The point is not which label to put him under (was Stalin a communist?) but what he's doing. Andy's onto it.

Okay, what specifically makes him "fascist"?

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but so many of these terms have been stripped of their meaning. I'm no fan of Putin, but if we're going to label him as fascist then I want to know what characteristics make that label fit.

Which is precisely why I avoided the term to start with.

Why is it that feeble-minded people get stuck on stupid red herrings? Still, it's you and BPSCG, so I expect a high degree of ignorance.

Hint: discuss the subject or shut up. Call him whatever you like - the premise doesn't change.

The premise - that Berezovsky has no chance to overthrow Putin -- is unremarkable and unlikely to be debated. So, we're left with nothing to discuss, except your choice of characterization of Putin's policies as "right-wing", and then later as "fascist"

Sure, it's not a particuarly weighty or important discussion, but this doesn't particularly seem like a weighty or important thread.

Fair comment, I didn't think there was a lot to discuss, either. I have made a bit of a subject out of Putin because I think he's being underestimated. It's good to see publicity starting to reach a wider audience and that's where someone like Berezovsky can make a difference. Still think Kasparov's the key, though. Maybe Beresovsky should slip him half a bar for the campaign fund.
