Another cartoon causing offence

It's a simple question, Mark. Why won't you answer it?

Becuase you are trying to force the debate in a direction of your choosing that I consider irrelevant. Duh.

Have you stopped beating your wife?

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

(Like I could resist?) :D
Hey, everybody deserves a slow, fat one right over the plate from time to time.

Now, to the serious point that Jocko is making. You like to conflate the actions of other religions decades ago or even hundreds of years ago with the actions of some religions now. The Catholic God, as of now, in fact does not want New Zealanders to react violently to an offensive cartoon. Maybe He did at one time (as during the Inquisition -- hah!) but now, today, He doesn't. In fact He's rumored to be right angry about people who punish blasphemy with violence. He, through His scribes, is even on record as opposing violence as a reaction to the taking of human life. So the statement to which Jocko reacted is just not factually correct.

I do? Christians and Muslims are rioting as I write this.

Not certain what your point is. You do seem to be separating Christians by sect. OK...then I think you should do the same thing with Muslims.

But have you ever heard of Northern Ireland?

Christians and Muslims often kill people in the name of their religion. Their holy books demand it.

Forgive me Mark but this is one I'm still struggling with. Do you mean alliterate?

Just a dumb pun by incorrectly conjugating the verb "to smite."

Well, they can't all be gems, right? ;)

Shouldn't take it alliteravely. :D

For some reason, I'm not all that concerned about the American Embassy in New Zealand.

But if the Kiwis try to burn down the building, I've no doubt our Marines will go down fighting.

Becuase you are trying to force the debate in a direction of your choosing that I consider irrelevant. Duh.

I am merely asking you a question about your statement. I didn't "direct" you to state:

Sadly, that is not an option because God wants them (and all other religious people) to do something about it...usually violently.

So it seemed a logical question to ask if you saw that "usual violence" translating into "actual violence" in this case.

Have you stopped beating your wife?

That's not the same thing at all, Mark, and I hope you really do realize that.

So again, I ask - about your own statement - do you think there will be violent unrest as a result of the outcry? You're the one defining what "usually" happens; I'm just asking if you see it applying in this case.

I don't see why you have such a hard time answering such a simple question. I don't want to take the Claus route of demanding yes or no, but I would be interested in anything relevant you have to offer at this point.

Christinas and Muslims all have a history of extreme violence. Pretending otherwise is silly.

True. But not an answer. Now that we've hopefully through hacking with your premises, would you care to answer the question?

Hi splossy,
I did not understand your point. It came across something like - if we met extremism with extremism there would not be as much of it. Is that correct?

No that's not what I meant.

I was commenting on how many people apparantly feel strongly about this and want to show the islamists that our free speech will not be cowed. But they do that by preaching to the choir on a website and letting a few newspapers do their work for them. I then compare this to how many people marched peacefully in london last weekend to protest their point of view. I think we cannot be surprised by religious groups getting their way when all we do is sit around bickering.

I don't think a peaceful march with "Free Speech is Paramount" slogans would be extremism.

Urgh, South Park and other adult cartoons such as family Guy have parodied religion for years. Is the fuss only kicking up now because of all the agro in the press about the muhammed toons?

Definately. The xtians see what effect the muslims are getting and think "hey maybe we rolled over too early?"

All the religions are gaining ground in this respect, if you ask me.

Sadly, that is not an option because God wants them (and all other religious people) to do something about it...usually violently.

This is the modern catholic church. God wants them to write twenty page sermons condeming the thing
