Another Cabinet Appointee With Tax Problems

President Barack Obama's spokesman is defending the administration's ethical standards.

Robert Gibbs told reporters Tuesday, "The bar that we set is the highest that any administration in the country has ever set."

During a briefing filled with questions about Tom Daschle's decision to withdraw from consideration to be Health and Human Services secretary, Gibbs pointed to experts who describe the administration's ethics rules as the strongest in history.
Link.

And he reportedly said this with a straight face. Cabinet appointees in previous administrations were forced to step aside when it was revealed they hadn't paid Social Security taxes on their kids' nannies, or they had a housemaid who was an illegal alien.

Now the administration with the highest ethical bar in history has a tax cheat running the IRS, an attorney general who recommended presidential pardons for convicted terrorists and a fugitive tax cheat, and a secretary of state whose husband has received millions from foreign governments.

Yes.

So if paying taxes is patriotic, is evading taxes... treasonous?

I think the other choice is Pinhead. ;)

Also, if none of these folks were nominated by President Obama, do you think any of them would have ever coughed up those back taxes?

Apparently you misunderstood what he meant by having a high bar.

This may be nitpicking, but:
Tom Daschle, "Not Technically a Lobbyist"TM
And your point is? You think registering as a lobbyist is the definition of lobbyist? That's ignorant.

It's so not suspicious your insurance company "friend" just gave you a car and driver as friends so often do

Who are you kidding?

Next week Obama announces his bold new plan for tax simplification.
If you think this particular round of tax evasion disclosures is the result of the tax code being complicated, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to offer you.

Come on. Hiding income as "gifts" appears to be a repeating theme here. Not paying taxes on your illegal nanny, hey, who wants to turn the poor nanny in to the INS. But calling free chauffeurs, use of the limos, house remodels etc., "gifts", that is conscious tax evasion. These guys are not idiots.

Earth to skeptigirl: That was tongue in cheek. ;)

I see I misread your sarcasm in the post I responded to above.

But now you've said something altogether different. Marc Rich was not a convicted terrorist. That's like Palin claiming Obama pals around with terrorists. Rich was convicted of ... wait for it.... tax evasion. That it involved trading with Iran by your definition means Reagan was a terrorist as well. If you admit Reagan was a terrorist, I'll give you Rich was one.

Daschle is out. My faith is temporarily restored. I don't think we know what Obama will really do as President. Every little detail so far is being repeated ad nauseum by the press. Its absurd to think we know yet whether Obama will be the person he campaigned as or not.

...

No, and I hope it leads to Obama pushing the IRS to crack down on these abuses. Who knows? Maybe just doing that will balance the budget. ;)

Tax the rich, tax the rich...

I wasn't saying Marc Rich was a terrorist.

I was referring to FALN, a Puerto Rican independence terrorist group that was responsible for hundreds of bombings in the U.S. in the 1970s and 1980s. Holder recommended presidential pardons for 16 FALN members.

Once more from the top.

A Senate committee today abruptly canceled a session to consider President Obama's nomination of Rep. Hilda Solis to be labor secretary in the wake of a report saying that her husband yesterday paid about $6,400 to settle tax liens against his business -- liens that had been outstanding for as long as 16 years.
No wonder the Dems like high taxes. They just don't pay them.
Casablanca said:

Captain Renault: Oh no, Emil, please. A bottle of your best champagne, and put it on my bill.
Emil: Very well, sir.
Victor Laszlo: Captain, please...
Captain Renault: Oh, please, monsieur. It is a little game we play. They put it on the bill, I tear up the bill. It is very convenient.

Replace "Dems" with "Washington Insiders" "Washington Elite" or "Policiticans," and I'll join the sentiment.

Other accpetable Alternatives include blood-sucking weasels; slime-coated, lice-infested bastards; malodorous, bent-kneed gits; or Redskins fans.

I am pretty sure that this is a Bi-partisan problem so I agree. It is just Obama's turn in the barrel and he is making some rookie mistakes.

The big deal now is that mistakes at this point in the game have a very high price tag on them ... and we are stuck with the bill.

Ah, don't you mean "Punish the abusers, Punish the abusers!" ?

The rich (individually) already pay much more in taxes than anyone else.

That's funny; I was pretty sure there were plenty of chances to get tax breaks, that you can only qualify for if you have a high economic basis for doing so.

At least, that's what I've heard from accountant majors, and how they got sick of the system.

There are tax breaks available at all economic levels ... can you please be specific in what you think is an unfair bias towards simply being rich?

I was relying on the word of an expert, who would be far more qualified to say than I ever would be.

EDIT: I've sent her an e-mail asking for more details.

Sorry ... but the term "expert" on this forum many times carries little weight. There are "expert" astrologers and psychics as well. Plus, "expert" economists have no market on always being accurate, as I'm sure you're well aware. Of course ... you may refer by name to these "experts" if you wish, and/or link to them.

I edited to note that I was sending her an e-mail.

This "expert" is an accountant, named Kathleen DuBach, that has worked with the U.S. Air Force and Army for nearly 40 years, and carries the civilian rank of GS 12 (she's gone up to 13-14 in her life, but the work was too much for her; not to mention she had to practically take over operations at her station in Korea for a short while, as the manager there had an emergency that cropped up...). She's also gotten her degree in accounting.

Her opinion may bear little weight to you, but like I said, I'm asking her for more details to refer to. So please be patient.
