IIRC, Anonymous hacked into the CIA's computers, and a few days later there were unsmiling men in black suits at fourteen of their members' doors. If I were them, I would not underestimate the FBI's capabilities as far as detecting the sources of DDoS attacks.

To be blunt, I think it's a matter of whose service you deny that determines whether or not the unsmiling men in black suits come to your door. If it's a commercial site, they may not care so much; but if you start pulling the government's tail, they're going to put a stop to it.

It might be interesting to see what happened if Anonymous hacked a major contributor to, say, Nancy Pelosi's campaign. I bet there'd be arrests within a week.

That's like shutting down the gold mine that sustains your community until you have a brick in your house. You might get what you want but you're essentially holding the rest of the community hostage.

They don't care about fixing any problems; Anonymous simply likes to bully socially-acceptable targets. If things like free expression were important to them they wouldn't be trying to shut down websites of people and groups they don't like.
