The historic Betsy Ross flag has the stars in a circle. It was her vision that it was a new constellation in the firmament.

But not many flags were done just like it, most having the grid pattern.

No- I think that version was made up after the fact as a pseudohistorical flag.

I thought it was called the "Betsy Ross" flag, named after the first person to sew it up in 1776.

YES! But this was not a common configuration after that.

I recall all this from back in 1976 when I read all the stuff that was published about the Revolution and the founding.

I once visited the Betsy Ross house in Philadephia with a friend of mine. He told me something like, "She may not have lived there, and she probably didn't make the flag but... it's right over there."
