An Athiest Senator

There's one debatable point in the article you link to:

This would make him America's highest-ranking atheist

Pete Stark has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1973. As an 18-term member of congress, it could be argued he is higher-ranking than a place-holder senate appointee.

edited to add: Oops, reading article more closely, I see Stark is mentioned in it. Oh, well -- it's still worth adding a mention of Stark to the contents of this thread.

Is Joe Biden's replacement an Athiest? Politically meaningless...he was appointed to be a place holder till Beau Biden retruns from Iraq to run for the job, but sort of an interesting story...
I'm sure there have been many house or senate Athiest members and maybe even a president or 2. Some even claim that Lincoln was Gay. With Obama elected we have broken the color barrier for POTUS so I am rooting for more ET's in office other than Kucinich.

We have already had atheist senators, we just don't know which ones.

I just watched "Spartacus" for the first time in about 30 or more years. When asked about religion, one of the senators said, "Privately, I believe in none of the gods. Publicly, I believe in them all."

Still, it would be nice to elect people who don't feel the need to pretend.

Until and unless we find out that Kaufman is demonstrably more athy than any other US Senator, is there a way to change the title of this thread?

It's really starting to get to me...
