So a friend of mine found this article after having an already ****** day and is convinced it's real...but while I haven't seen the video in said article, it sounds too absurd to be true, and the website's name seems suspect at best.

University Students Sign Petition to Legalize Abortion after birth

Poe's Law being what it is, what are your two cents? I'd try to reassure her myself, but my powers of skepticism aren't nearly as sophisticated as the other posters here, and I (and more importantly, she) needs a second opinion.

*shrugs*

Some will sign it because they're too stupid to know what the language really means. Some will sign it because they didn't even bother to read it and just wanted to be nice. Some will sign it because they think it's funny.

Meh. All this proves is that people will sign anything. There's no real data here, only a guy going around Jaywalking.

It is a stunt designed to be evidence of how little college students understand abortion. Unfortunately, it is merely evidence of how little college students understand petitions. It also serves as evidence of how little people who pass around petitions understand petitions.

Seismosaurus is right.

It is not a serious poll, but even if it were serious, so what? It is not like a million signatures would make any legislators consider legalizing murder of four-month-old infants.

I mean just look at the other gems below this article.

Public college assigns comic book on lesbian sex, child molestation as mandatory freshman reading

edit: now this is something I can get behind. I can't tell whether or not our reporter approves or disapproves though? He sort of seems like a stick in the mud from his other posts.

Does the link say just how long after birth you can abort them?

Reminds me of the famous "ban dihydrogen monoxide" petition. That stuff's terrible! They find it in cancer cells, after all :D

the petition states "fourth trimester"

If you can show me a general thread of logical thought in the whole theistic, pro-lifer dialogue, I might start complaining about their use of the phrase 'fourth trimester.' If not, it's just more of the same. I no longer bat an eyelid at these sorts of things.

Fourteen signatures in an hour? If I know college students, half of them would have been high, and half would have signed as a joke.

Personally I think abortion should be compulsory (I'm not pro-choice, I'm just pro-abortion!). I wonder if I could get a petition going.

I bet anything you like you could go to some church event with a petition for Banning "Pre copulation abortion", i.e. abortion before there is anything to abort - and get plenty of people to sign it.

Didn't you know that planned parenthood encourages women to get abortions when they aren't even pregnant?

And sometimes they put aborted fetuses back in the womb just so they can be aborted a second time!!!11!!

I don't know. I went through a pro-infanticide phase in college (long story) so some of them might have been sincere in some capacity.

I once saw a clip of people collecting signatures amongst students and environmental activists to have dihydrogen monoxide banned. Yep........some people will sign anything.

Same here. Except when P&T did that, it was to show how if you just used the right tone, people would not really think about what they are signing. They never claimed that the folk's signing it (at an eco-gathering) really wanted to ban water.

Similarly, back in the days of 'The Man Show', Adam and Jimmy got a bunch of women to sign a petition to end Women's Suffrage.

I have to agree with Seismesaurus. The people who signed it either did not understand the petition, or got the joke and played along.

I would sign it just to be funny. It's like if I were asked to participate in the Milgram Experiment. Knowing that it's completely harmless, I'd crank up the amps and let 'em fry. :D
