An apt comparison, and Hanjour did not have to signal when exiting the turn.
Fact is that it was a typical 3 minute turn and if one is flying level then banks to turn without increasing power or using elevator to counter loss of vertical lift, the plane will descend anyway. A three minute LEVEL turn is harder for a novice pilot!
And to Clayton's original questions:
When I'm with a brand new student and they ask me what direction to fly, I usually just pick something prominent on the ground, point to it, and say "go that way". If we need to do something really exotic, such as reversing course, I might say something like "turn around and fly towards the power plant stacks back there..."
