"All I wanna do is wipe bum.."

Argh! Double post plus wrong usage of the edit function. Silly me.

Of course she’s going to say it’s a joke. After one or two days of people ridiculing her, what else is she going to say??? ”I was serious and I’m stupid”. What better way to cover up one’s stupidity then to say “I was joking”.
You think she was seriously advocating washing toilet paper?

Are you planning to say you're joking at any point, or are you really that dumb?

I have; I've also given them a link to the website.

Meaniwhile this is spreading from news site to news site, and I use the term "news" loosely ... each taking the BBC as their authority ...

Moral: Always read the primary source.

Dr Adquate = wise man.

I was reading about this Crow toilet paper crap [what a pun!] yesterday, but only a few hours later some of the smarter journalists had already figured out it was a joke*, while most major (tabloid) papers where still reporting the story at face value.

* Checking the sources was what they had done.

This is funny as hell. The problem is global warming is for serious discussion, but instead we have to listen to the idiocy of Ms Crow, and Ms David. Please tell these two to get back to their day jobs. Crow making pop music and David ahh what the hell does this woman do? What is her claim to fame? Oh yeah her husband.

You think she was seriously advocating washing toilet paper?

The washing was quoted as her brother's idea, not hers. It reads like she was just throwing ideas on a theme out there. I accept it was a joke (because she says it was), but you must admit that if you are on an environmental tour and you make a statement like that then you're very likely to be taken seriously. Context is everything. When has Sheryl Crow made a public joke before? is she known for it? or is she known for her environmental lobbying and other political themes? She wears anti-war t-shirts on TV. Are they jokes too? She has a reputation for hardline opinions and stupid statements like this one:

"I think war is based in greed and there are huge karmic retributions that will follow. I think war is never the answer to solving any problems. The best way to solve problems is to not have enemies."

If you're going to make a joke, joking about the thing you are actually trying to make a serious point about is...

...dumb. I'm not surprised people took her seriously. She spends most of her time trying to get people to take her seriously for whatever political bandwagon she's on.

"... who's [sic] judgement I trust implicitly."
I accept it was a joke (because she says it was) ...
Not because (a) it's funny (b) no-one in the world could possibly hold those views?

... but you must admit that if you are on an environmental tour and you make a statement like that then you're very likely to be taken seriously.
Well, can you find me one person in the world who did take her seriously?

Apparently, she didn't realise that her little skit would make people laugh and laugh and laugh --- and not realise that it was a joke.

I'm completely baffled myself.

Detatchable sleeves to blow your nose on?

Amend that moral to "always read the primary source a few days after the primary source makes the comments, in case the primary source is now claiming it was a joke"
I knew as soon as I read the quote in the O.P.

C'mon:

Crow has suggested using "only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where two to three could be required".
It's the word "pesky" that's the dead giveaway.

Take a deep breath and admit it, you've been had.

I would never make a joke about something as serious as global warming. Would she be so callous as to mock the very mission she was/is on? Maybe she thinks global warming is a joke too.

I notice, by the way, that The Painter's waffle didn't answer either of my two questions, and I'm not feeling charitable, so let's repeat them.

You think she was seriously advocating washing toilet paper?

Are you planning to say you're joking at any point, or are you really that dumb?

Waffle?? What waffle?? To answer your questions; your first question; I believe it was her brother who was advocating washing toilet paper, not her. Now your second question; the answer is No.

Well, can you find me one person in the world who did take her seriously?

Er...there are plenty in this thread, myself included. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the past antics of Ms Crow, but she is no stranger to sticking her neck out and making asinine statements about topics she doesn't appear to have any education about. "Celebrity makes stupid comment" is extremely common. Whilst I thought her suggestion was incredibly thick, it didn't occur to me it was a joke because she says this sort of thing on a regular basis, depending on what political bandwagon she's trying to sell records on the back of.

So yes, me and everyone else in this thread, plus the BBC and the thousands of other people who reported this seriously, and the millions who read it, were had. But there's no pride or triumph for her in that because the joke is neither sophisticated nor funny. If she wasn't on an environmental campaign, then it would have been immediately suspect, but given the context and her history of bleating about war, karma, oil, Saddam Hussein, WOMD, CTs, and now the environment, I can fully understand why people thought "god, another stupid statement from a bored millionaire".

If you go on a bus tour called STOP GLOBAL WARMING, then make suggestions about how to stop global warming that you don't actually want people to take seriously, then you deserve ridicule. You'd think they'd be able to afford a PR agent, because this will do more to damage their 'message' than any number of serious statements.

Mocking your own message? Come on. That's an error of judgement. Presumably we're now supposed to assume that anything Sheryl Crow says is not to be taken seriously? That will be problematic when she suggests that people stop driving SUVs.

I, for one, will say I believed it wasn't a joke, simply because it wasn't funny and it seemed absurd that she'd poke fun at a cause she was currently campaigning for. Which is more likely, that she'd mock her activism or advocate using minuscule amounts of TP? Knowing as much as I do about Sheryl Crow (nothing) I felt no compulsion to research things any further. What conclusion would I draw? That she's stupid, but just for a different reason?

And I don't see how it can't be possible that her brother has contempt for her. "Why don't you just wash it?" "Ooh! Good idea!" "(Moron.)"

This might be at least a partial explanation why she and Lance Armstrong are no longer together. He strikes me as someone who does not suffer fools gladly.

FWIW, when I read the whole thing, in context (can't find the link any more, was in the New York Times, linked from Drudge), my reaction was, "Holy, rule8, is this supposed to be a joke?" Problem is, it was right in that nether world between being obviously ridiculous and being just another stupid statement by another stupid entertainer. I think teek gets it right.

BTW, if she intended it as satire (satire of her own mission? odd, that...), she needs to read Mark Twain's newspaper story about the amazing petrified man. If a satirical genius like Twain could foul up a joke, well, maybe Crowe should stick to something she's good at, like her guitar.

Did you give it back to her afterwards? Because that would explain her recent albums.

She hasn't spoken to me since I got all curious about Lance's artificial ball, and if he could do any tricks with it.

I actually detest her music mostly because my former coworkers loved it (at least, she was the only female over the age of 17 I ever heard those forty and sixty something perverts lust after. I assume that counts as music appreciation, at least in terms of albums sold.)
