So the headline of the story doesn't really reflect the conclusion of the story. Here's my question; how often do you see this kind of news reporting on the internet? If so, then why do you suppose that these writers never take the time to come up with headlines that are much more accurate to the actual story itself?

I know that Fark has a section devoted to this somewhere so don't bother pointing that out.

If so, then why do you suppose that these writers never take the time to come up with headlines that are much more accurate to the actual story itself?

In the case of newspapers (including the online versions) it's because the headlines are created by sub-editors who have neither the time nor the inclination to have actually read the story.

Good reporting is rarer than gold. In fact at my parents home I can sift for gold in the waterway, and find some (not enough for anybody to live, but enough for tourist to have half a day fun with a good memory). I have yet to find a source of news (internet, paper, TV, Radio) which provide consistent good quality news.

It's also much more important to write something that is sensational and contains frequently searched keywords than something that accurately reflects the story for those sub-editors (headline copywriters). Their job is to generate the maximum amount of traffic, not to be accurate or informative.
