Yesterday I saw a firefighter walking around my building with 2 of the maintenance guys. Does that mean the fire department is going to run my building now? Or are they planning the controlled demolition?

1 - soldiers would probably do a great job running a city
2 - they would do it more far more cheaply than the current government in most cities

Just an observation.

When THE BIG ONE hits California, or some like nasty disaster where the area looks like a war zone, I imagine that troopers would be used to keep the peace + order.

Jones also neglects the fact that training troops in safe real life cities would aid them when they are in cities were it is not so safe.

Yesterday I saw two soldiers in Tesco, and if that isn't proof of Bush's plan for placing his Texan Klan jackboot on us all I don't know what is.
BTW they were buying beer and curry, so we're probably safe until Monday.

My one brother-in-law is a Marine. They're even infiltrating our families!
.
Oh, we've been there for years: why else would we make you live in a state with far too many consonants in the name?

Oh I pity anyone having to share sleep space with them post dinner...

beer + curry

All I wanna know from A.J is when..? When is this take over gonna happen? He's been talking all this ◊◊◊◊ since Waco. It's 2010!

1. Why?
2. Hardly.

You guys have a weird infatuation with military types...

Is there some kind of condition where people have to keep getting the attention in such anxious ways?
1. Reveal a plot
2. Get people panicking
3. Before buzz dies start the hint of another plot
Repeat ad nausum

Just a mo........I thought it was UN troops who were meant to be invading America? I mean, who's in charge of this op that they can't even get basic details right??

hmm

'You guys?' What the hell does that mean?

1 - Soldiers are by and large responsible, and not on the take with bribes and such. Discipline is pretty thorough. The military has decent systems for command and control. Running a city is a pretty basic endeavor for the most part: Get the trash picked up, keep the electricity running, meet payroll, meet security needs, etc. The military seems pretty good at this stuff, especially in a situation when people aren't blowing them up with IEDs and what not.

2 - Chicago has around 3 million people and 50 wards. Each ward is run by an alderman making $100,000, and those corrupt individuals work extremely part time. I'm sure that a military warrant officer could do a better job at a lower compensation level.

Let's look at law enforcement. Military police officers in the US army make $39,000 (link) Chicago cops with 18 months of experience are making $58,000 minimum, and they enjoy the protection of a powerful labor union.

How about firefighting, another key city service. Military firefighters also earn ~$40,000, and they are on call 24/7. Chicago fire department workers with a few years of experience make $60,000, and they are on duty for 24 hours, 9 or 10 days per month. Therefore, it would take three Chicago firefighters X $60,000 = $180,000 to equal one military firefighter @ $40,000.

So yeah, I think that the military would run a major US city effectively and more cheaply. If you disagree, please feel free to indicate why.

The only problem is that they would after time - cease to be military. In countries where the military does just this the military devolves into corrupt civilians with fancy uniforms.

Short term good idea

Long term Disastrous

Bingo, Hans.
There is no reason to assume that soldiers. by and large, are not humans, sharing human traits good and bad with civil servants.

Well, der. I wasn't suggesting (as Jones incinuates) that we replace civilian government long term via a military coup in Chicago. I was just pointing out that, short term, it likely wouldn't be a disaster and might even have a few positive benefits. Jones is a fear monger and couldn't possibly even consider such a thing. It seems relevant given that many city and state governments are bankrupt.

Are you even suggesting that we replace civilian government short term via a military coup in Chicago?
Isn't it up to the People of Chicago to decide who runs their affairs? If military types think they can do it better, they better put their names on ballots.

The troubles of Chicago are not a short term disturbance. If you have a sudden emergency at hand, where a major natural desaster wreaked havoc and rendered the civil administration incapacitated or understaffed, they might conceivably request relief from the armed forces.
