I see the GOP guys are busy beating themselves about the head for sticking Keyes in the Illinois congressional race.
Even some of the hardcore party faithful are saying "what a jerk!"
I gather, from early polling, that Mr. Obama is well ahead, and I wonder if Keyes decided to jump into the race just to get a little attention for his extremist views?
I find Keyes to be very interesting. I think he is an example of what lies at the core of many "conservatives" - I use quotes because what passes for conservative these days is a pretty far cry from Barry Goldwater in my opinion. I once saw a very interesting debate about religion in public life featuring Keyes and Alan Dershowitz. Now, politically, I agree very little with either of these two, but I was struck by the difference in the behavior of both men as the debate got heated.
I don't have to tell you that Keyes wanted to keep "God" in the schools and the rest of that BS retoric. Dershowitz is an atheist. I Disagree with Dershowitz about many things, but at least he is intellectually honest in his argumentation. Keyes, on the other hand, starts off seeming sane and reasonable until his arguments are materially challenged. When he feels threatened in his position he takes refuge in that fundamental dishonesty that plagues so many of his ilk when their backs are to the wall. The goal, for him, becomes to prevail at all costs, the truth be damned. It is a trait common to many folks on the right.
And as much as I hate to say this, disagreeing as I do with so much that Allan Dershowitz represents (activist government promoting social engineering, promoting notions like "hate crimes" and all the rest of the leftest agenda), I was extremely impressed with Dershowitz's argumentation. The truth is, I felt ashamed for Keyes and the debate lowered him tremendously in my estimation. (I'm sure it keeps him awake at night.)
This debate is available on tape from somewhere. I'm sure you could find it surfing. I think it was at Harvard, but I am not sure. They used to have these debates on PBS regularly. This was one of the better ones. Actually, I don't think Keyes is really that much of an extremist. His views more or less mirror exactly those of our Commander in Chief, not to mention 75% of the country. I can remember when Dubya appointed Ashcroft his great praise for Ashcroft was that he was "a man of faith". I'm sorry, but I don't want this country run on faith. Well, maybe if the faith was Voo Doo or Druid that would be cool.
