Man, the poor people of Alabama. First they have to deal with the crazy that was Roy Moore as chief justict. And now there is this: http://jesusfetusfajitafishsticks.blogspot.com/2012/08/alabama-democrat-harry-lyon-anti-gay.html

This guy really, really doesn't like gay people.

He also doesn't like fat people. He once ran for mayor and said this: “The fat people of Pelham need to shape up or ship out. Let’s face it, the fact is that fat people are ugly and disgusting to look at as much as is traffic congestion and wasteful spending by our city government.”

He also isn't too keen on immigrants stating this: “It would only take 5 or 10 getting killed and broadcast on CNN for it to send a clear message to not set foot in Alabama,” Lyon said.

He's an outstanding pillar of the modern conservative community! :D

Does he plan on killing the people who hire illegals as well? If not, then the deaths of 10 illegal immigrants (despite his twisted delusions) will not stop illegals from coming to Alabama.

I am not sure why you are saying that, given that the jughead in question is the Democratic nominee for the position.

ETA:
Ah, here is his just-kidding defense:
On Thursday, Lyon said the remark [hanging illegals] was a bad joke after a lengthy conversation in which he told the reporter that immigration was a federal issue.

“Those comments were taken totally out of context,” he said. “No. 1, you can’t hang anybody. ... That’s a total misrepresentation.”

I'm guessing L.Y.S. was saying that based on Lyon's ultra-conservative views on (at least) gay rights and immigration. "Conservative" and "Democrat" are not mutually exclusive categories, especially in the deep south.

I take it you both forgot to say "illegal" in front of "immigrants"? I've noticed a lot of people have this habit, I'm sure it's just forgetfulness and not an attempt to mischaracterize anyone's position. I'm sure you'll both do better next time.

That's been my argument for years. All anyone ever does is complain about the "gosh darn mean illegal aliens sneaking into our country and taking our jobs" but no one ever, ever complains ""gosh darn greedy corporations employing illegal aliens and taking our jobs"

Does it make it better that he'd like to kill 5 or 10 immigrants illegal or otherwise?

I agree about fat people but isn't Alabama one of the porkiest states in the country?

Are you even being serious right now? Really?

First, way to assume bad faith. Your  indicates that you think Travis and I were actually trying to mischaracterize Lyon's position. You could ask. I wasn't, and I can't speak for Travis, but I'd bet he wasn't.

Second, I didn't mischaracterize anything. Wanting to expel all illegal immigrants and kill those who remain is a position on immigration. More specifically, it is a position on illegal immigration. But it is both.

Third, why would anyone feel the need to mischaracterize Lyon's position? To make him look unreasonable? This is why I am asking if you are being serious. Because it sounds like you're saying that this is a guy who has a reasonable, common-sense position of wanting to kill all illegal immigrants in Alabama in 90 days, and then Travis and I come along to try to make him look like some kind of nut. That can't really be what you're saying, can it? (L.Y.S. made this same point much more concisely two comments up.)

So I guess, if it were me, I'd try to save my indignation and my  for an occasion when the distinction between "immigrant" and "illegal immigrant" actually matters to the discussion.

Does it make it better that he'd like to kill 5 or 10 immigrants illegal or otherwise?
No, but my issue is with those who are anti-illegal immigrant being labeled as anti-immigrant. This isn't the only thread or context in which this occurs.

You're not supposed to say "illegal immigrant" anymore because it is hurtful and mean. And probably racist, too. Please refer to them as "undocumented workers".

Stop being such a meanie.

I grew up in Pelham, AL, and attended Pelham High School. I didn't see "fat people" as being a huge problem then, but perhaps things have changed since I moved away.

If I may expand on your point, depending on the location, it is not just corporations, it is often also small businesses and even neighbors.

I fail to see how it matters. My paternal grandmother was an illegal immigrant. My maternal grandfather was a legal immigrant. So either way following this guy's plan one of my grandparents would be open to execution for the crime of wanting to live in America.

Yes, but illegal immigrants tend to be poor, so it is OK to want them dead, or something like that (I fail to see how the distinction has to do with the crux of the behavior reported in the OP). They also tend not to have any option to legally get into the U.S.A..
