AG Gonzales has resigned

Whoever Bush nominates to replace AG will have to be confirmed by a Democrat-controlled Senate. If they somehow manage to remember where their pre-election testicular fortitude went, they could make things very interesting.

Isn't congress in recess?

Ooo, ooo, can I suggest someone (a lawyer as well) to replace Gonzales that might give Bush a bit of credibility?

fark:
White House officials say Attorney General Gonzales has submitted his letter of resignation. However Gonzales says he can't recalling writing any such letter, or his reasons for taking such an action.

I, like all right thinking people, am glad to see Gonzalez go. But blaming him for the actions of the Justice Department is like blaming Jeffrey Dahmer's right hand for killing those people. This is Bush's administration; what happens is because George Bush wants it to. He and only he is to blame for the utter mess in which the Justice Department now finds itself.

I almost feel sorry for the next lackey that Bush names to the AG job since the appointee will have a most difficult time when he goes to Congress for Confirmation.

I wonder if Rove is the one who told them to have him resign the morning of the Michael Vick plea deal since it would be the bigger cable news story.

In one of the articles I read they knew about it Friday. Friday evening is when the White House tends to dump bad news stories because reporters want to go home, and fewer people pay attention to the news. I suppose that since this one is a biggie they feared Sunday morning talk shows, and there are other things going on, which is atypical for late August (Shark attack season).

It should be too hard for Dubbya to find a replacement. There are plenty of graduates from Regent University, Liberty University, Bob Jones University, or any other politically connected Bible-beater diploma mills he can choose from.

I think you meant "it shouldn't be too hard for Dubbya to find a replacement." (FWIW I had always seen it spelled "Dubya," but given the mutability of nicknames, the double "b" might be as correct.)

Would you want this job? Who would want this job? You get fourteen - sixteen months, at best, minus the time spent in confirmation hearings in Congress. You have to restore public confidence (such as it ever was) in the AG's office. My guess is that the guy who is the intermin, the Soliciter General, will probably end up with it until the end.

Anyone else have a bet, or a likely suspect? Wait, did I mean likely prospect? :D

Perhaps, but I didn't vote for him either time and I'm embarrassed by him. Despite what John Bolton says, Bush represents all of the US in the executive branch, not just the ones who voted for him.

I did not vote for Dubya either time, either, and he is an embarassament.
It is just that Cain make an awful lot of these kind of statements about a number of topics.

It wouldn't surprise me. Also, he waited until people predicting his resignation months ago had mostly given up, so it wouldn't seem like he was resigning under fire.

Chertoff? Here's my advice for the Dems in control of the Senate. Grow some balls. Let Bush know up front that absolutely no one who has already served in his administration will be considered for confirmation.

Another thing. Reid should not let the Senate into recess at all for the remainder of Bush's term, or at least until August 2008 - so that Bush cannot pull any more recess appointments.

Which means Shrub might go for an ex-Senator so that collegiality will trump good sense.

Psssht. What have you noticed? In the last month? You can, if you want, PM me the relevant posts, as I guess they only appear in the past few weeks.

Yes, on one level I am embarrassed by Bush as an American. He embarrasses me as a human, too, but I figure that will go away soon after he does, which is 75% likely after Jan. 20, 2009. I think it's rather different for his naive enablers. Families can be embarrassed by a crazy uncle, but it's not by their choice. Others consciously(?) chose Bush and supported him. That's dreadfully embarrassing.

The fact that anyone still supports him is, perhaps, most embarrassing of all.

If you want someone who is not connected to G W Bush, he should nominate G H W Bush.
