WASHINGTON - U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned, the New York Times reported Monday, citing a senior administration official.

The official said an official announcement would be made later in the day.

Linky

Not much more info than that so far.

ETA: CNN is reporting it, too.

CNN is reporting that Bush is likely to nominate Chertoff as Gonzo's replacement.

"For the previous six months, the Justice Department has been virtually nonfunctional and desperately needs new leadership," said the Schumer statement. "Democrats will not obstruct or impede a nominee who we are confident will put the rule of law above political considerations. We beseech the Administration to work with us to nominate someone whom Democrats can support and America can be proud of."

Yeah. Good luck with that.

Chertoff?

That will give the 9-11 conspiracy nuts heart attacks.

NWO! NWO!

:j2:

Woot :yahoo !

Maybe we'll get someone who thinks that habeus corpus is a Constitutional right...

And here I thought it would be nearly impossible for Bush to do worse than Ashcroft. Before most people knew Harriet Miers existed Gonzalez was cited as a possible candidate for the Supreme Court. Scary. Like Rumsfeld and Rove, he can now "spend more time with his family."

Even though you refuse to admit it, I know some of you jackasses voted for this administration more than once. The scars inflicted on this country and the world should continually and forever embarrass you.

Glad Gonzales is gone. He did a great deal of lasting harm to the country.

But Chertoff? You've got to be kidding. He should have been fired after Katrina. What an incompetent, sanctimonious twit.

Yep. And the fact that he is the likely Bush nominee is surprising why?

Our lovely president is nothing if not consistent.

“The unfair treatment that he’s been on the receiving end of has been a distraction for the department,” the official said.

Yes, how unfair of the congress to go after an attorney general who worked so hard to undermine the rule of law in the US and then spent months lying about it.

Who is this "official"? What is the point of ambiguously attributed quotes like that?

This seems like one of the strangest resignations of all times. How did rumors get started that he was going to resign when it seems like only a very few people could have known that he was going to resign and why would they start rumors that they were going to deny only to have the rumors shown to be true within hours of the denials?

Is it possible that Gonzales got tired of his role as Bushco fall guy and decided to get the hell out of Dodge? Was his resignation related to the resignation of Rove?

What next? Who's he going to put in for the new head of Homeland Security, John Bolton?

I heard that the Justice Department is planning to send an Alberto "Torture Time" Gonzales memorial water board plaque to the prisoner recreation center in Guantanamo Bay.

Rumor has it that the inscription will say "That's not actually torture, Senator" or "The Geneva Conventions are quaint".

Whoever Bush nominates to replace AG will have to be confirmed by a Democrat-controlled Senate. If they somehow manage to remember where their pre-election testicular fortitude went, they could make things very interesting.

I wonder if Rove is the one who told them to have him resign the morning of the Michael Vick plea deal since it would be the bigger cable news story.

"I don't recall."

*John Malkovich voice*

"It was out of my control."

"It was out of my control."

(Malkovich movie ref is Dangerous Liaisons)

Do I smell a little self righteouness here?

Perhaps, but I didn't vote for him either time and I'm embarrassed by him. Despite what John Bolton says, Bush represents all of the US in the executive branch, not just the ones who voted for him.
