It isn't the ivory that is supposedly imbued with any special powers around virility. Sometimes the figures that are carved from ivory are seen as helpful in that respect, but mostly not. Ivory purchases in China are not about virility, but about status and a display of wealth.

I don't dispute that at all. But it seems like China has the opportunity to learn from our mistake here, and avoid doing the horrible things we've done. As a species, we know more now than we did in the past. We shouldn't all have to learn it from scratch.

With a better skill set they wouldn't need animal horns/tusks, but more to the point, without superstition both genders would probably realize there are better alternatives to address periodic masculine flaccidity.

As I understand the "mammoth ivory" trade is generally a cover for selling elephant ivory.

Rhino horn isn't used in traditional Chineses medicine as an aphrodisiac or to treat virility problems - that story seems to be a myth perpetrated by Western media.

Although, having said that, there seems to be a movement in Vietnam to use it for treating bedroom issues. Which just goes to show what rubbish mythical medicine is since people are now using something that doesn't work to treat something it was never used for because somebody with no knowledge of how it was used made up a story about it because Rhino horns are vaguely cock shaped. Gullible idiots the lot of them.

To make it absolutely clear. Rhino horn is used in Vietnam as a cancer treatment. A notable (a member of government, I think), claimed about 10 years or so ago that taking rhino horn had cured him of his cancer, and that started off the boom in its consumption. No doubt other powers are assigned to it, but the principal claim is as a cancer cure.
