Actors who act different characters

I got so spoiled by "Homicide" and him, I have not been able to watch another cop show with any regularity.

What else is he good in?
Nextflix has the first 5 seasons of Homicide. That alone is worth the subscription price.

So what is he the best in, what are the two standouts (I have allready seen "Frequency" "Get on the Bus" "Glory" and "Primal Fear" he was good, but nothing Pembelton level. Which of these other movies shoud I check out?

On a different note I was watching Jeffrey Wright the other day in Basquiat and I was amazed that he was also the drug kingpin in the Shaft remake and MLK in "Boycott" (About the Montgomery bus Boycott). He truly rocks.

Johnny Depp should at least be in the running here. Also Jonathan Pryce.

Sylvester Stalone. The level of depth he brings to each role never fails to astound me. Incidently, my brother hit me in the head with a baseball bat when I was a kid.

How many times? You must have been hurt very badly.....:D

Micheal Keaton a bad Batman?

In contrast, look at Batman, Tim Burton thought it would be good to get a comedian to play against type in the Batman role and cast Michael Keaton. Total disaster, and utterly unconvincing. I can suspend my sense of disbelief, and think there is a guy running around in a campy suit fighting crime, but I can't accept a clumsy pout as someone being tough.

Utter and pure baloney. Michael Keaton is Batman. He's the only believable one of the three. Point in case: the scene in Vicky Vale's apartment with the fire poker. Watch it again. Then, imagine Val Kilmer or George Clooney doing that same scene. They pale in comparison. Wanna get nuts? Come on! Let's get nuts! That scene sold me to why he is the one true Batman. Very few in Hollywood could pull it off. He passed with flying colors.

What about Sean Connery? Oh sorry, you mean people who play different characters...

Jim Bowen

Hey! There are at least 3 different characters:

(1) Middle: Without beard (James Bond)
(2) Late: With beard.
(3) Very early: The love interest in "Darby O'Gill and the Little People"
(no beard, Irish accent, a couple of musical numbers)

=======================

What do people think of William Macy? I've heard he's an "actor's actor", very highly respected by the acting community in Hollywood.

Definately must agree on Andre Braugher, Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Depp.

My personal favorites are Kevin Spacey and Brendan Fraser.

Did anyone see the series that Tom Hanks produced on the Apollo program? Definately some very good bits by a few actors that had me doing double takes when I realized who they were. In particular 'the stapler guy' from "Office Space" as a NASA administrator.

Boo

edit: Just saw the post about William Macy. He is on the list.

Or "Alf"'s earthly host as "The pad Fuehrer" Günther Wendt.:D

How about ?

Steve Martin

Morgan Freeman

Robin Williams

and a guy (that when hes in the movie its good because of him), Gene Hackman.

Tony Blair.

From the good old days, Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, Burton and Brando of course. All fine character actors.

Good actors, all of them, but could they play a wide range of roles? I would only put Brando and Burton. Part of the problem is that many of them just had powerful personalities that just got in the way. Eg, Douglas. Burton in "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" was a great role, though.

I know what you mean about Douglas, he did tend to take a part by the throat and shake it, but I think he was a very versatile actor nontheless.
I think there is some distance between his role in "Ace in the Hole" and "Lonely are the Brave" for instance.

I think Quinn is overlooked because of Zorba, not that that role did him any harm of course.

No argument as far as Burton is concerned. He`s very good in "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold"...aided and abetted by the lovely Claire Bloom of course.
"Who`s afraid of Virginia Woolf" instantly comes to mind too.

#1 most versitile actor of all time.......

.......Steven Segal! (just kidding!)

How about Jimmy Stewart?

I can't help but notice we aren't talking about women in this thread. Surely there are women of talent.

Perhaps it's just that there haven't been the opportunities for as wide a range of characters, except in comedy. When I think about comedy, several greats immediately come to mind: Gilda Radnor, Andrea Martin, and the incomparable Imogene Coca.

Dramatic roles? How about Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep to get the ball rolling. At least I'll start some arguments.
