Achy Faky (Purple) Heart

I guess I still don't understand why "Fraudulantly using military valor for personal gain" is any worse than "Fraudulantly using X =/= military valor for personal gain," deserving specific treatment under the law.

You have a good point.

In the two examples I quoted, the first was definite fraud which should already be covered by law. Not the law about medals, but general fraud laws.

The second example is just some guy being a jerk. He does not appear to have gained anything by it except false glorification in his local paper. Don't know if that's legal fraud or not. I think he merits another article in the same paper exposing his dumb ass.

Hey, I've used my uniform and medals to get laid. Seen plenty of other guys do the same. Some women get all a-flutter at the sight of a uniform. Gotta use whatever edge you have. But you have to deserve that edge. Those are the rules. :)

OK let me get this strait. During the election all sorts of people/pundits/politicians lined up to mock John Kerrys Purple hearts with little backlash. Now a movie brings down the wrath of jeebus!?!? What a crock.

Do you have anything to back up the notion that Kerry cut his out of the newspaper?

The underlining outrage is that they are mocking purple heart winners. Which is exactly what happend in the election.

By the way. If i want to walk around wearing a purple heart who is the govt to stop me. Its a free country....well its supposed to be.

Sure...pick your own medals to award yourself...why not print your own money...after all who is the government to tell you what to do?

Or maybe some things actually belong to the government? Like the right to decide who gets to wear a medal, print money, or practice surgery?

The metals arent owned by the govt. they give them to the person who can then sell, give, or throw away. Unlike money which is owned by the govt.

Im not talking about fraudulantly using the metals to get a job or as some credentials. But If i want to wear something I bought why cant I??

what about this

Suppose a veteran has a purple heart that he got for truly being injured in the line of duty

and he uses it to get laid once a week.

Is that OK. Is that preserving the sanctity of the symbol.

This is much ado about nothing

in the words of Penn Jillette

ITS A MOVIE FOLKS

The next thing you know there will be controversy because someone in a movie uses a cross to defy a vampire

Let's chalk it up to a "plot hole" in the Owen Wilson movie. At any given wedding in real life, there is bound to be a veteran who would instantly recognize a military fraud.

Actually, I recall a substantial hue and cry over what Linda Blair did with a crucifix...

It's illegal to hold a Purple Heart that's not yours for the purposes of showing off?

In that case, President Bush, who fancies himself a war hero when the closest he's ever been to combat was protecting Texas from the Vietcong and smears John Kerry'sheroics, which have the virtue of being real, needs to give back that Purple Heart of his.

Huh?

I very much doubt it is illegal to accept a Purple Heart given freely.

I know. It just pisses me off that he has a Purple Heart for getting entirely deserved criticism. George Bush, of all people.

My wife berated me when I forgot to take out the trash. Where's my Purple Heart? That was a lot of criticism I endured!

Wounds aren’t funny.

I recall Bill Mauldin’s recounting of his famous interview with Georgie Patton. Mauldin, a mere noncom, of course wore his Class A’s with ribbons. Patton, who seemed to put on some form of fancy dress every day, was wearing his ribbons too. After they sat down facing each other, Mauldin says “we read each other’s ribbons.” Patton grunted in disappointment when he saw Mauldin’s Purple Heart. Evan a psycho like Georgie couldn’t argue with that; he had to give lowly Sgt. Mauldin some respect. We all have to, and it's pleasant to do so.

What do we owe a Purple Heart faker?

No, probably not. However, given post #4 above, it appears that it would be illegal for Bush to wear it.

While it wasn't illegal for Bush to accept it, it was, in my opinion, exceedingly unethical and pompous for him to do so.

I am guessing the acceptance was a political act. Had he refused it, someone would have busted his chops for being ungracious. Maybe others, depending on how he phrased his non acceptance, would have been pleased had he acknowledged who -- people hit by flying metal, and such, in combat -- it is intended for.

I suspect that it would only be illegal if he was claiming or implying that he earnt it.

Of course, there is no evidence that Bush is claiming that he earnt it himself let alone wearing it.

Hey, why do you think they give soldiers medals?
