check out Derren Brown interview with Dawkins. They talk a lot about it. Many psychics really believe what they do. Just like people reading horoscopes, they fall for the confirmation bias. That is, they are prone to believe, and when they have a hit, they believe it was due to mystic powers, while when they miss it, they believe "it was a day where the mystic links were weak" or something like it.
Dear AcesHigh and Other JREF Friends,
I would like to add that for a good part of her life, Sylvia has had people believing, confirming and encouraging her "psychic abilities". If you have people constantly validating that you have God given gifts, then I think it's possible (remember we are not dealing with a rational person here) that the truth and reality can be forgotten. Especially since it's been for so many years.
This might raise the argument that-
If she is the one that started this whole thing about her being a psychic and without her telling people (lying) that she is a psychic, those people couldn't perpetuate the madness. She would have to lead them to believe that in the first place and if she knew she lied about it then, she must know that she's lying about it now.
I honestly believe that she's heard enough times how many lives she's changed and how many people she's helped, and how she has this talent, and how she's special so now
she has shaped her identity by this. Completely irrational, but I personally think this is the case with Sylvia. People throughout her career have treated her as a messenger from God. It might be hard for you to believe but they do. Some people really think she is a religious pioneer. By having people tell you that they didn't commit suicide because they read your book, or they quit their drug addiction because of a lecture they saw, or she brought religion to them when they could never believe in anything before- that has got to give someone a huge power trip. These are only a few examples and there have been many many more stories like this.
Whether she told them anything significant or true, I am not debating that. To the people that come back and say all that stuff to her, to them she must have said something worthwhile. Whether it was general information or not. The people in this forum could probably have the same kind of effect by giving your advice too. I am not defending her psychic abilities. But trying to give you my thoughts on how she really is as a person.
She has, however, been very vague and wrong about many things. The wrong things don't affect her, she just dismisses them as being human (and fallible) because she says only God can be 100% right. These "misses" don't affect because her believing that she is a psychic and can't always be right (perpetuating it in her mind), in her own twisted way, she believes she's psychic even more. If that makes sense.
Your friend,
Francine
