Abstinence-Only Sex Education

Teaching mutual masturbation might help- also not treating sex play like something "dirty", whatever the hell that means. In short, drop the Judeo-Christian hypocritical cant and teach how to do it - and how not to do it.

Not to be too pro-life here, but I think in this case abortion actually is murder

Nice point! So the baby would be about 3 months?

I do not understand why Palin's daughter is off-limits? I understand why Obama is trying to down play it, but she and her daughter are free game.

My reasoning is that I don't think we need another world leader that refuses to look at evidence, yet still insists on their beliefs because of their religion. Abstinence education does not work, studies show that there is a higher rate of pregnancy and S.T.D's when the only option is NO SEX. Yet this woman, with all this knowledge at the press of a button, still insists on her daughter not using condoms. I mean what was she thinking.

If Palin was like most mothers, and made sure her daughter was educated in safe sex education, and the daughter still got pregnant, then I can see that there is no issue her. This is like a parent not allowing her child to get immunized, and then the child gets ill with something that would have been prevented, then saying, "at least she didn't get autism from that nasty mercury in the shot". In the end it is the child suffering, all because of the parents choices.

And why is the Rep going on and on about her marrying the father of the child? Who says that is the best decision for the daughter? This guy might be a sleeze bag and they are going to force their daughter to marry him just because they had sex? Is the Republican Party that desperate?

Who was the guy quoted earier from MySpace? Was that the teen daddy's page?

Sorry for ranting, not even sure if my argument holds water, but I think that not teaching your children about real life (even how credit cards really work) is dangerous and almost child abuse.

That is the whole reason for which I left her, two days later. And I'm not pro-life, I'm pro choice: My choice of helping her raise the kid and then taking it for myself if she didn't want it. But, in the end, all I have from those days is a serious scar in my heart, nothing else. Was I stabbed? Yes, yes.

Why do you think her daughter is not allowed to have any privacy?

At our current rate of progress with sex education in schools, I think that might be an option in about 1000 years.

Had sex that resulted in pregnacy. Outright forceing a marrage would be very risky stratergy.

Yes:

We have no idea how good a father he will make and I understand lots of people marry their childhood sweethearts.

Have to feel kinda sorry for the guy. For most kids who you had sex with is unlikely to have a significant impact on a presidential election.

One thing I had always 'believed' in, was that the Netherlands approach of early and thorough sex education was demonstratably superior to the UK's approach of, 'Now that you're 16, I suppose you had better have one giggle filled lesson where you roll condoms on plastic dildos' after years of subtly (or not so subtly?) making sex to be dirty and bad.

Unfortunately, I have no idea whether or not this is correct. Does anyone have any links to studies on the comparative effectiveness of different approaches?
Proffessor Yaffle: I can only access the abstract of the BMI article and the press article fails to mention at what age the sex-education classes start. It also seems to view any sexual activity of teens as bad - what is the real goal of sex-education? To stop teenagers having sex, or to reduce the rate of unwanted pregnancies and the spread of STDs at all ages?

Abstinence-only sex education is a contradiction.

You don't have driver's education without getting behind the wheel, do you?

Sex ed classes would have been a lot more enjoyable if my school had taken your analogy to its logical conclusion.

You should be able to get the paper - BMJ articles are free after a certain length of time. Try going through this page - it has "free" next to the article.

I believe in the "teens talking to teens" principle. In Norway we have Red Cross Youth volunteers going around campuses teaching kids about sex. As far as I understand, they make a bit of a show out of it. Probably has a far greater impact than their adult teachers.

It has been observed by some that the "pro-life" movement is actually an "anti-sex" movement. Unwanted children are seen as the wages of sin, richly deserved by the folks who failed to see that sex is only for procreation.

What would you expect a nun to believe in? Or a soccer-mom, right after sunday school? Sex is a sin. A dreadful sin. Please arrest me. Send me to hell.

Somehow soccer (well, they call it "football" there) moms in Netherlands -- and Norway, and Switzerlad, and pretty much all of Western Europe, -- seem to regard sex as a happy and enjoyable activity, and take steps to ensure their teenagers know the dangers and how to avoid them. All of these countries have fewer teenage pregnancies than US. And fewer abortions too, oddly enough.

Gee, ya think?? If fewer abortions were what they actually wanted, I suspect that by now they would have adopted the aforementioned model, which actually works.

Granted, Western European approach pretty much guarantees that there will be SOME unwanted pregnancies and SOME abortions, so if your goal is ZERO then abstinence is the way to go. And good luck with that.

Particularly explaining the part about the cooties!
