Abortion is out of the question.

I wonder if he knows what an ectopic pregnancy is? Or a harlequin baby?

I don't think he, like many anti-choicers, care. If the pregnancy threatens a women's life, well, that's their God's will. If she dies at least she won't have to account for the "sin" of abortion. Getting to the "good" afterlife is everything.

Besides, we must always leave open the possibility that God might find it his allegedly omnipotent and omnibenevolt heart to pull a miracle out of his divine tuchus and save her life... Just like he did for Terri Schiavo! :D

WTF? The whole "God said 'I knew you before you were born... blah blah'" was god speaking directly to Jeremiah? How in the hell do the bible literalists make that into their whole anti abortion justification? God said he knew that one person before he was born, not everyone. I always thought it was more abstract about all of mankind, but there it is in black and white.

Not only that, but if that is the only phrase they are using to justify thier position its just wrong. an equally valid theistic interpretation is that the soul pre-exists birth and that God knows us in heaven before we are born. True, one has to accept the immortality of the soul for this, but seing as that is also part of most theologies (and definitely part of Christianity), it is not much of an issue.

The real problem is that it is an unrealistic setup. It would be nice if the guy always got the fear of god put into him and married the girl but that just doesn't happen. Even when it does there is lingering resentment and anger that can turn into serious abuse towards both the woman and her baby.

I agree that abortion should be safe, legal and rare. We have already seen what happens when it is illegal, back room pregnancies and unwanted babies left in dumpsters. I really do not want to go back to those times.

No, it would not be nice. It's a very good thing it doesn't happen. If there was a god I would thank him for that.
I cannot understand how anyone can think fear is a good basis for a marriage.
Such a suggestion also shows a very negative view of women: they must be married if pregnant, because they really need a man.

I believe abortion should be safe legal and rare. I personally dislike abortion but its still the womans choice.

Rather like tooth extractions or appendectomies, eh?
I personally dislike both, having endured both. It is the choice of the individual.

Since he had been saved, he should have let the baby get aborted, then the baby would be guaranteed to be saved, too.

The girl was SOL though, but her punishment is on God's head, not his.

who cares about Jack Chick.

Rarely do I agree with Thunder in the forum, but honestly Cainkane1, your straw filled obsession with Jack Chick is getting a little over the top. Trying to use him as an example of what Christians actually believe is like trying to use Stalin as an example of what democrats believe.

Perhaps God is against abortion because he fears the risk of incarnating himself to a woman more modern than his prior host, Mary. With modern technology, she might figure out that the fetus is not human and have it terminated. Just as a cuckoo would hate for other birds to be able to identify and destroy its eggs in their nest, so must God fear abortion and prenatal screenings. His parasitical plot to enter our plane of existence depends on our women remaining unsuspecting and helpless to his magical artificial insemination!

Is there an amniocentesis test for God genes? So a modern 'Mary" knows when to abort? :)

If Catholicism is correct, then a cell sample would show similarities to a certain type of bread, and a blood test would show alcohol.

I was under the impression that it's more of a pasttime than an actual example of anything. Cainkane did have a thread a while ago where he asked whether his constant posting of Chick tracts annoys people; the general consensus was no, a lot of people enjoy reading them and talking about them. I don't think anyone considers Chick a strong argument for or against Christianity, but there is a charm to his work.

It's like a book of the month club, only instead of reading books we hit ourselves to the head with bricks.
